Anybody doing (pop...) songs

… with elektrons?

:smiley:

well, i do…can’t say whether it’s pop or not, but song it is :joy:

this one is done with pickupmachines on OT:

https://soundcloud.com/wavemarrow/pickupmachine

and that one is a video of a live performance with OT pickup- as well as flexmachines:

cheers,
door

Yes I do, but people don’t really seem to get it :slight_smile:

This is two of my latest:

I hope you like them.

thanks guys, really cool songs here!

Well not that pop but yeah the songwriting process is here. And boy, song format + pickup machine improvisation sir, i’m impressed :+1:

@the Crotch I hear synthpop ala DAF, maybe it’s minimal wave i’m not sure. Do you work with a DAW?

I’ve been listening to experimental, edgy stuff all my life and have heard lately really cool indie and mainstream stuff. The Lorde + Son Lux collab is really cool as well as Modeselektor+Apparat, SBTRKT+Litle dragon, Flume+Chet faker is ok too. I like some Alt-j…

I like that it’s not artsy or progressive pop. I dig the hooks and the chorus catchiness
maybe it’s that i was so focused on techno, edgy “The Wire” acts or is there a new listenable mainstream cross over? I will spare you the horrible mainstream max matin/stargate/drake productions you begin to find interesting when you study pop song structure…yeah i’m loosing it. Burn me I LIKE TOVE LO!!

So concerning vocals how do you work with elektrons?

(ps fuck i get the link: scandipop and elektron, this thread is doomed :sob: )

anyone in a band?

I’ve never heard about DAF. Is it a band? Mostly I’m inspired by Joy Division, The Cure, Human League (early) and The Knife.

I do not work with a DAW, but I use a Zoom R24. I use the mastering presets there because I have no clue how to use a compressor and stuff like that :slight_smile:

For the vocals I use a TC Helicon right now to alter my voice. I often change between a low male voice and a high female voice.

Listen here for my female voice :slight_smile:

went to your video channel, yes pretty lady voice! And i learned the correct pronunciation for Rytm ( rüuuutm ; ) )

So you’re more scandiwave than scandipop. The dave gahan impression is awesome.

Do you records 8 tracks on the r24? You record the voice at the end? How many AR outputs?

Can you explain again the arppeggiator issue with the A4 please?

I don’t even know what scadiwave or scandipop is :slight_smile:

Thanks for the Gahan comment :slight_smile:

Generally I record two A4 outputs and two AR outputs at the same time. The two are connectet with a midi cable and I also want to be able to change the levels individually afterwards.
I could connect the AR directly to the A4, but I think it’s hard with the levels.

The voice processor has two outputs. I havn’t really understood how they are balanced and what comes out of the outputs. I record the voice at the end.

I don’t believe the arp issue is an issue. However, I havn’t understood how to use it as I want to.

When using, for example, thru mode I want to hold down two or three notes on the keyboard to make the arp play the notes in beteen (does this make any sense?).
This works with the internal keyboard on the A4… “live” and it results in a fuller sound, but I cant sequence multiple notes on the sequenser.
This doesn’t seem to have to do with polyphony I believe because it works live.

If you want to… go to my soundcloud and listen to The Swedish - Live and The Swedish (not live).

The non-live recording has a sequenced arp… and it sucks in comparison with the live recording.

This is the poppiest thing I’ve done: https://soundcloud.com/dustinlarochelle/plug-you-in

OT, MDUW, Dark Energy and Slim Phatty. Recorded the arrangement straight from the OT’s outputs and added vocals in Logic.

Also done some covers:
https://soundcloud.com/dustinlarochelle/all-we-have-is-now-cover

MD and MNM, this was the first time I recorded everything separately to a DAW.

https://soundcloud.com/dustinlarochelle/dont-ask

OT, MD and MNM, arranged with the Elektrons and recorded from the OT’s outputs. I recorded the vocals in Logic, processed them, and bounced down to a track which I then loaded into the OT, so everything gets glued together by the OT’s compressor on the master track.

Oh and there’s this: https://soundcloud.com/turquoisemountain/only-hours
OT, MD, MNM and Minibrute. Added vocals afterwards in Logic.

Elektrons can make some fine pop music IMO. :slight_smile:

I’ve made some songs with the Elektrons and a microphone. Dunno if one could call them pop. Maybe in an alternative universe.

Here’s a song, uh err, about masturbation. Definite chart potential! Made with an OT, an A4, a microphone and a cheap Zoom FX box for the vocals.

And here’s another song, made with just an A4 and a microphone. It’s a love song in Portuguese. I don’t know any portuguese, I was just using the google translator.

I made some pop-like songs (one per week) using only Analog Four and Es-1 :

…on which planet is daf a popband?

…only .on that one where everything’s pop…

…and sure elektron gear can pop…but if we’re talking real pop, let’s be honest, there’s no way around a daw, end of the day…

Yeah! I remember those days from the beginning of humans until early 90’s when there weren’t any DAW’s at all… No pop. No pop at all.

I use my Machinedrum in my band along with traditional acoustic instrumentation (drums, guitar, bass, etc) and create songs that would fall under the large amorphous umbrella of the pop category. Probably not what you were asking about though. I actually aspire to create leaning more heavily on the elektrons (only have the MD currently, but this whole science lab thing has left me in state of desire re: the OT, A4 and AR) and that’s kind of where my current writing is headed.

Here’s an example. Not the most adventurous usage of the MD in this song, but it’s there:

I’m sorry for this post… in advance… but there was a time before Elektron :slight_smile:

I hope you like this one.

Hope you don’t think this is more poop than pop, but here’s one I did with A4, vocals and FL.

I totally get you. I’m really into Moderat at the moment too. It’s a specific yet vague mix of electronic, melancholy, but then pop-y melodies and structure. Very, very enjoyable to listen to. I’m working on some stuff inspired by Moderat at the moment, using a Rytm and A4. I’m just considering whether I sing myself (possibly with that Roland VT-3 voice transformer) or get someone else to sing.

@laughinganimal

“plug you in” makes me think of a poppier Xiu-xiu. I dig the MM on “don’t ask”, i’m always amazed when people (pong fu is one of them) make so warm sounds with it.

@zwolf

very nice voice! The mixing is good (studio?) Do you know Junica, he has your range of voice and super retro yet thick new order-ish production. Maybe also Pillowtalk sort of.

@thecrotch

if you want to know what scandipop is you just have to look at all the billboard hits from the past +10 years. From Britney to Katy Perry to Tove Lo. Max Martin/Dr Luke (swedish) and Stargate (danish). And yes that guy from ABBA has a venture with american producers.

@barfunkel

yeah in a parallel universe you’d be counting your royalties money in a jakuzzi filled with hefner’s bunny girls ; )

@burncycle

found your channel previously when typing analog four+pop in YT search engine ha ha

@reeloy

i feel you on the DAW part, arrangements are not really where step sequencers shine. Also in pop you have colliding parts and lot’s of doublings of vocals and chords. Huge track count for ultra seemingly “basic” tunes.

Pop has a really huge spectrum from jill scott, to depeche mode, to radiohead to katy perry to daft punk and grizzly bear. I’m not sure pop means prechorus/chorus/bridge. I mean at billboard level yes but if we consider a tune for its “catchiness” Guy Borrato and Lusine are pop for exemple.

@marcofrodo

yes i find it pop like chemical bother or mgmt kind of pop.

@Zillamatic

It’s a specific yet vague mix of electronic, melancholy, but then pop-y melodies and structure.

mmm, this could be aphex, plaid or mùm but yeah electronic pop is very simple, like the opposite of brainy. Gus gus was doing that, in general i think iceland and scandinavian artists try to find a compromise between futuristic production and almost “folk music thinking”. Maybe Japan/Germany do that too: technology + primitive songwriting?

you can send me your soundcloud links if you get somewhere with all that : )

I’ not sure if this is pop. Anyways… made it today.

It started as a minimal project where I was supposed to use the A4 only. However, i felt I needed some cool metal hits on it to make it more dirty so I used the Octatrack as well.

ha ha you’re the anti-Fever Ray
