Any tips for a good kick that thumps instead of booms?

Any A4 kick experts in the house? I’m looking for some tips on how to make a nice kick that isn’t like a 808-ish low boom (like the Subbe preset, which I’ve used in every track of mine so far, in a bit edited form), more like a 909-ish thump or stomp. Something with a bit more mid-frequency content.

Any help would be appreciated!

Kicks are all about ADSR, fitering and, less importantly, the waves in the oscillators.

Attack 0

Decay and Release 50% (or more, to taste, but try to keep them the same- and infinite decay is why the 808 booooooommmmsss, so not much more than 50%)

Sustain: 0

If your boom has a 24 DB LPF, roll off the low with a different filter so it occupies a different spot in the mix. Then go less resonance and less cutoff than the other kick. Get your volume right then maybe distort it with some OD to for that lo-fi static kick.

Then make sure you’re using a saw on one oscillator and a square on the other. Double tap osc1 and add a touch of the white noise generator if you want.

Start with note g0. then use a very short pitch envelope (no attack, very short decay). Play with the env amount for various thumb timbres

Then a longer pitch envelope (bend function is great for this) with a very small envelope amount to shape the tail.
