Ah okay, thx. Saw a youtube video with the device and some NI-Kontakt handpan vst, so that is why I assumed it was a controller only.
This is a Yudin Workshop tongue pan I got a month or so ago in a trade. Just seemed like a fun idea to have something like this. Havenāt been using it a whole lot yet, Iāve only done a couple of jams including some piano and orchestral VSTs and thatās something I intend to do more in the autumn. I donāt have any background with acoustic percussion so Iāve been playing it with mallets so far, the highest notes are pretty difficult to play with hands.
I love wooden tongue drums. Iāve thought about playing live ambient sets with one of those + a synth and Cosmos, but was worried it would come off as too new age
As long as your heart is in it, just do it!
I am not into new age-stuff, but I discovered the last couple of years that making soundscapes/ambient while patching/twisting knobs has an enormous relaxing effect on me.
Together with running it is an activity where I think about nothing else and my head empties. The same vibe I got with tongue and handpans. If someone would call me ānew ageā because of that, they can go **** themselves
I had hoped it was Intellijel Plonk, since I know he had that in his modular case when mixing Lush (thereās an Instagram post and a Sound on Sound interview) but the Bandcamp notes for the album say āHang on Lush performed by Tom Bakerā, so, yes, it really is a handpan. (Still hoping to synthesize something like this, I own Plonk but itās been packed away since a few days after I acquired it, so I have no idea if it can approximate these sounds.)
Try the Odd Hang app. A cheap way to play around with various tunings until you find what you like. Then buy that in hardware.
Great tip, thanks!
The āBank Cā of dum kits is focused on tuned percussion and has some good starting points to make hang drum type of sounds.
Probably the Yamaha DTX 12 is probably another good one to try and build this with.
I got to play one of these Yishama F2s. It was pretty unworldly when you hit the ding.
Nice. Ive not been down to F2 yetā¦lowest ive been is A2.
One day. Lol
Nothing wrong with sounding a bit new age or leaning into that aesthetic, IMO. I know thereās a stigma that surrounds most stuff thatās new age-y, but by and large I think most folks would agree that thereās something cosy about that kind of aesthetic that doesnāt necessitate a fervent belief in the healing power of crystal skulls. If you like it, lean into it.
Valley of the Sun was a cool mail order new age tape label that Numero brought back. Worth a listen.
Listening to this while doing some work tonight. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome, Iāll check that out - thanks for sharing!
