Steel is real, nice sled…
Classic Brit sled
if it were, then it absolutely would be a ghost bike!
Quick solo mission this morning.
I had two pedal strikes on my ride today, I think I’ve always ridden bikes with taller BB’s in the past. Do yall feel like it would be worth it to get some shorter crank arms when I eventually start modernizing the drivetrain, or do any of y’all have bikes where pedal strike is possible and you feel like you eventually got to a point where you instinctually set yourself up to have your inside pedal high going into a turn?
I personally wouldn’t adjust crank length unless you have an ergonomic readon for it. Pedal strike is just something you learn to work around on road bikes. I still get it occasionally because I did my time on fixed gear, always scares the crap out of me.
It makes sense that I’ll just adjust, I spent ten years on a tall racey Peugeot that was too big for me, pedal strike never even occured to me on that bike lol
How wide is your foot ? Pedals come in different widths and thickness, and would help and be easier than changing crank length. Crank length will affect power too.
I do have pretty small feet, and my old bike had much smaller pedals than the ones that came on this one, easy thing to swap and try out too.
God. I hit a pot hole while turning on my steamroller and went down hard. I switched to click in shoes after that instead of the wide platform bmx style pedals.
Five rides in and I’m quite pleasantly surprised at how easy it’s been.
I mean, I’ve not gone more than about 15 miles in a ride and I’ve not gone up any really big hills, but I’ve done well over 50 miles this week (a mixture of singletrack, towpaths and a bit of road) and only had to get off and push two times. The difference in my mental health and general outlook is immediately noticeable. Fucking nature man…
Sweating like a cunt though, and my arse is ruined. The old spoon saddle just isn’t enough for my weak old gooch now I’m past 40.
Someone recommended me the Ergon SMC Sport Gel, anyone used one? I don’t want to go back to padded shorts, so something with a bit of padding seems sensible.
I’m extra sensitive ‘down there’ and for me the most critical part of finding the perfect saddle is the width. I measured my sit bones and they’re just a bit wider than most, so 155mm Spesh Power saddles or weirder still, their women’s specific Mimic. That’s my favorite, but saddles are crazy subjective. For lots of folks it doesn’t matter much, but for me it matters a whole lot. Especially 25+ mile rides. Rubbing some chamois crème or even noxema down there helps me a lot as well
Check the ergon core as well. I have SQlab saddles on my road and gravel bike, the most pain free saddles I have tried.
Width is indeed crucial, depends on sit bone width and drop. As your bike has no drop, you can go slightly wider than on a race bike.
But tilt is equally important. Start horizontal (front of the saddle), you can tilt forward or backwards only very slightly. Judging from the picture, the nose of your saddle point slightly upward, so you might want to try if a more horizontal position helps.
Fore aft position is also important, as is the rest of the bike fit…
But ergon is definitely a good brand for ergonomic saddles!
And if you go for longer rides, bib shorts are a necessity if your butt is sensitive and you sweat a lot… Finding the right one can be as challenging as finding the right saddle though… Combination of saddle and bib short is where it’s at!
You also have minimal ones that you can wear under shorts…
Yeah, mine are about 130, so a 150ish width for me I think.
I never used to be that bothered by saddles, but it’s immediately noticeable that it’s going to be a problem if I don’t sort it out soon.
Yeah, the spoon as it is is kinda where I ended up having it before when I was riding a lot of trails and out of the saddle a lot. it’s not quite right for my current bimbling, but I’ve always been more comfortable with it tilted back a tiny bit. It’s definitely not wide enough though, I can feel it in my arse bones.
Yeah, if I’m going on a 50 mile ride on my road bike or whatever, I’ll bib my arse up right proper, but I need something for the everyday biking I’ll be doing on my Genesis that’s not too silly for the odd bit of trail riding and the Ergons seem to fit the bill.
