Sure Volca Beats is cute and adorable. But what does it do I can’t get in a MachineDrum? I do those 808/606 drum sounds all the time and happy with the MD. Am I missing out?

Volca Beats is an analog drum machine for those with a tight budget.
Sonic Lab review:
You probably won’t miss it too much as you have Machinedrum, unless you explicitly want that Magical Analogue Sound™
Anyway, reviews say that it is good value for money. Might be hard to find from shops tho…
As you say, the Volca Beats sure is cute and adorable, not to mention available at a very nice price.
As you have a Machinedrum, and are happy with it, I’d stick with it. That’s the same conclusion I came to.
If you want some really nice analogue drums I can recommend the Vermona DRM1 mk3. Granted, it’s far more expensive than the Volcas but it’s entirely analogue (no samples at all) and the output is very clean.
I really dont see any point of having Volca beats if you have machinedrum…
The one-eyed cat dude has it nailed in one sentence!
Because I am very picky with the eq for kicks, the Beats is probably going to annoy me. I like to scoup out the 400Hz and leave only the tick and boom. Better pass on the Beats.
Get the Volca Beats and hammer it with your steel-cased Machinedrum. Assert Swedish superiority.
Seeing as all the hooolabaloo over the Akai Wolf have just graced us with its presence - how do people feel about the Volca Beats now? As much as I love my Machinedrum, it has a tendency to sound insanely bitcrushed/tinny/metallic and was thinking about spicing up the drumming a bit with some Volca Beats. It’s cheap - but is it just a toy? Or will it accompany the Machinedrum well?
Agreed.
I bought all 3 Volcas for my girlfriends birthday this year. It was almost a joke but she likes them. We call them her baby synths when they sit next to my stuff. They sound cool and are fun to play with, but I don’t see any real purpose to own them other than fun novelty analog goodness. Not to say you can’t coax some awesome out of them, but they are toys compared to many many other things. The sequencers are a joke and it’s too much effort for me to sequence them otherwise for what you get in return.
Akai wolf. Blah. Cool idea, but what can you really expect for 200$ from a company that has been catering to a different market for so long now. The thought of comparing either of them with any elektron is insulting.

True that. I had a whiff of GAS for a Volca (and the Rhythm Wolf) yesterday, but figured it’s better to just save up for the AR, even if it’s going to take a while. Just no point in getting “toys” you’re going to be selling later on and lose money on.
The kick and snare on the Volca Beats are basic but perfectly fat and fine. If you want more flexibility, you could also look at the Jomox MBase and/or Mbrane.
The volca beats isn’t expensive, there isn’t much money to “lose” since it doesn’t cost much in the first place. I wouldn’t really call it a toy. As far as the sound goes, I agree the kick is nice but the snare is weak IMO. I won’t be selling mine even when my AR arrives.
i have both and i’m trying to sell the volca. not necessary. but if you want to buy one cheap, i’m your guy.
