Guitar player just announced their next issue will be their last. They started in 1967. After Future Music just shuttered and now this, I’d imagine Computer Music is next. All owned by the same company.

For a while now guitar player magazine was sort of overshadowed by guitar world, even now guitar world has a pretty popular online presence on youtube and such. Reminds me of how thrasher magazine eventually killed off transworld skateboarding, it just took a long time for the body to go cold.

Ha! I’m just sick of seeing the same artists showcased since I was a kid. There’s at least two generations of guitar players since the 90’s. Why not throw them on the cover?

Huh. It’s funny, my initial reaction when I saw this was something like mild disappointment but really it’s just a nostalgia hit. One of those “the world I grew up in is gone” moments when it should have been “why didn’t this happen decades ago?”. While I did have a short period of liking it, it was always pretty bad and any fondness I still have for it is really just nostalgia for those early days of learning guitar.
Every issue was about 70% adds, an article about Led Zeppelin, an interview with Steve vai, and some disinformation about pickups. Rotate out different classic schlock for the article and generic shredder for the interview and basically reprint the same issue for thirty years. Oh, and throw in some tabs that have been easily accessible in mass since webcrawler.
It’s a bummer to see print media disappear but it’s like gp was trying to go out of business.

I remember most of their tabs and transcription sucked too. Like, super lazy inaccurate phrasing and always the worst songs, especially compared to guitar world. I feel bad for trash talking a dead guy but this magazine was never that clutch.
I definitely went through a “buy all the guitar magazines” phase, but in the end, I think I settled for a GW subscription for a few years because any new magazine that came out with some sort of gimmick would always suck and get cancelled after 4 issues and there was a pretty high ad to page ratio in guitar player too.
Definitely nostalgic, but it’s better as one of those fuzzy memories than one where you try to focus in on it like a normal person would.

That’s exactly what I did. It’s funny to see the gear I lusted over and could never afford 30 years ago now going for peanuts on eBay.

I still have some old promotional stuff from gear that I used to lust after and at one point had numerous synth and guitar brochures up on my wall. Now looking at some of it I’m not even sure what I was thinking.
I guess back then the options were just a lot more limited than they are now, which probably made it easier to think that what was available was what you wanted.
Now it’s like, something new comes out and I can’t even get excited about it. Can’t remember the last piece of gear that came out which I was like “I absolutely must have that”.

Big same here. I was going through some keepsake boxes and found cutouts of gear from mags that I would put on a cork board or my wall. Things I couldn’t afford but dreamt of. Now I can afford them and have zero desire.
However, the p-6 was a must buy for me.
