Fellow anime-phobe/anime-skeptic here. Finally got around to watching Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and it was pretty great—recommended. Lots of genuinely creative action sequences, character designs, and a pretty daring juxtaposition of gothic horror, western, and sci-fi. I wish there had been a bit more build in the introduction, slower character intros. etc. but not a huge issue.
Also, I saw Boy and the Heron since I last posted here and it is genuinely very good. Miyazaki films can be a bit same-y sometimes, but this one feels unique among his stuff. Probably my second favorite Ghibli.
I don’t pay much attention to Academy Awards but Boy and the Heron is well deserving of is award for Best Animated Feature, as well as awards garnered from other organizations.
Seems to be a lot of crossover between fans of Freiren and Apothecary Diaries, despite being two very different shows. Very good chance that your wife will love Apothecary Diaries. The MC is not a typical female lead, to say the least.
Lately I’ve been watching several titles that feature characters being constantly disappointed by their mentor or boss, because that person is a slob and/or eccentric:
Freiren
Dungeon People
Yatagarasu
Wasn’t a deliberate choice, just worked out that way.
With these recommendations it would kinda be nice to know if the recommender is
a) in fact generally not into anime, and/or
b) why the rec is suited to people not generally into anime
A lot of the stuff above just seems like popular anime recommendations from big-time anime fans, and there’s already a thread for that.
I’m not an anime head, the samples are delicious in the anime I suggested… just listen to the clip… anime has nice samples in general but these are especially organic an darkly musical and I’m just talking about the dialogue… + very good for conveying messages… in other words even the dialogue has sweet tones to bend to your sampling will and enhance a vibe or hue on the spectrum that you might be looking for…
throw any of these samples into paul stretch and they will sing
