Ghost in the Shell is in its own category of anime. Few other titles even come close.

My bad. The OP said he has Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Amazon Prime, but this show is actually on HiDive

Yeah, it’s one of the surprise hits of 2022

I was just about to cancel HiDive because I finished Made in Abyss, I still have a few days left so I’ll check it out. I can’t justify having Crunchyroll and HiDive though and Crunchyroll seemed to have more of a selection, what do you guys think, which one is better?

Sorry, I tried to only list anime on the services you have and tried to exclude HiDive shows, as good as some of them are, although I obviously messed up here.

I put off getting HiDive until they had a special, which was $24 for 1 year subscription which to me was irresistible. The special price was sometime between Black Friday and Dec. 31 as I recall.

These are the HiDive exclusives - meaning, anime you are unlikely to find on another services such as Crunchyroll. Perhaps this will assist in your decision:

The one title I can confidently recommend to you as a must-watch is Legend of Galactic Heroes - a deep space opera taking on big subjects. But it’s got over 150 episodes - you’re not going to finish this thing in a few days.

The rest of the titles include some that I personally like but my tastes might be too offbeat.

This streaming sight has a great catalog, even if you’re not comfortable with a pirate streaming service, they have a great sorting algo, with almost every movie or series you could think of.

Has anyone mentioned this yet? Creepy and disturbing. Might be up your alley!

Years ago I was part of a conversation at work where a colleague said she had never cried during a movie. A friend of mine asked if anyone had ever heard of Grave of the Fireflies. He looked over at me, paused, then asked “hey…are you tearing up!?” True story. I think I need a tissue right now in fact. *sniff"

This title is highly recommended but has some borderline nazi imagery/thematics and therefore isn’t for everyone since it’s at times hard to tell what the author is implying. If anyone were to watch this, don’t be conned into watching the new edition as it’s an exercise in “explain a plot badly”, the original from the late 80’s and early 90’s is the only version worth watching.

yes, it’s worth pointing out HiDive has the original version of Legend of Galactic Heroes not the remake.

The original version had the Empire modeled after Prussia which existed in the century previous to Nazi Germany.

However, fascism was not exclusive to the Nazis and this is shown on several occasions in the anime. I didn’t read the source material but the anime starts out looking like a simple war between a democracy and a Prussia-style autocracy (nobility ruling over commoners, with the Kaiser on top). Then it gets deeper into the contradictions inherent to humans and human society like fascist elements within the nominal democracy working towards seizing power, and military genius in the autocracy working towards weakening the power of the nobility.

Even so, the average person who watches the show and doesn’t do any research is going to think nazi imagery. There’s a lot of “sieg kaiser” and references to secret police. I think even if they say it’s modeled after prussia, to believe for the average viewer there’s no parallel to nazi imagery is hard to imagine.

I’m not saying your analysis is wrong though.

I didn’t say there’s no parallel to the Nazis. I’m saying fascism is not exclusive to the Nazis.

Now let’s get back to talking about anime.

Look, I like the saga of tanya the evil but there’s a reason I’m not recommending it anywhere. If you’re going to give a strong recommendation for something borderline controversial just be prepared that someone will without fail note the controversy.

But it’s absolutely nothing personal.

I do not believe Legend of Galactic Heroes is pro-Nazi at all so I saw no problem in mentioning it.

Summary

It’s actually an tragic epic. The winner of the war is determined not by political ideology but by organization/coordination vs. factionalism/infighting. It’s a long sad tale of regular folks losing again and again to opportunists who seize power. The exploitation of regular folks is hardly depicted as a good thing.

The heroic Yang Wen Li deliberately turns down the opportunity to seize power because of his personal belief in democracy, further weakening the argument that this show is pro-fascism. His eventual successor Julian is horrified by the bloody history of humanity and also resists any opportunity to seize power.

And it was also mentioned by other people.

I try to be responsible but I refuse to be held responsible for knowing every possible issue/trigger that every single person who reads this thread might have.

My biggest gripe with the show

Summary

The visuals accompanying the third end theme is a spoiler. pretty much tells you somebody is going to die soon.

But yeah by all means, anyone who is not sure if any anime title I recommended will trigger them or not - ask me and I’ll answer straight up… assuming I remember that the trigger(s) actually appeared in said anime. Quite often I’ll completely overlook or forget about something that is a trigger for someone else.

However if I suspect you’re just trolling, you’re on your own buddy

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
I’m going through and checking them out one by one. I also just started watching Demon slayer , I’m two episodes in and I’m liking it.

I was wondering that too. I +1 this one too, as someone who also dislikes and can be very cynical about anime, its tropes, and fandom.

I also +1 Paranoia Agent by the same people who made Perfect Blue, and which was recommended to me in another thread in here.

In addition to all of the great suggestions, I’d highly recommend Golgo 13: The Professional, Wicked City and Vampire Hunter D.
