I’m really enjoying the new Gundam. There’s a lot of modern anime-isms that turned me off in the first couple episodes that made me wary but as it’s gone on that’s largely fallen away. I do still wish they wouldn’t have used such modern music, it doesn’t really suit Gundam IMO, but that’s my problem. I’d be curious what people who aren’t familiar with the original show think about it though.

Found Redline on Tubi. It was produced by Madhouse around the time that Satoshi Kon was still alive and active at Madhouse. He was such a critics’ darling and his movies did so well that he overshadowed the works of other directors, such as… Redline. It doesn’t pretend to go as deep as Paprika or anything like that but if you like action oriented scifi its a fun watch.

Picked up a bunch of Blade Of The Immortal comics for 50 cents per issue After reading them I was curious about whether an anime was made - and it turns out I can watch the anime on Amazon. The art style is faithful to the manga/comics, though they indulge some digital FX here and there. Looks promising so far.

Planetes continues to be a nice watch. Recommended for those who enjoyed Space Brothers.

I’m digging Gundam GQX too. It’s so weird seeing such an alternate story branching away from the original. I’m also liking how much it leans into the psychic stuff that is usually in the background of other parts of the series. Looking forward to how things unfold.

I don’t dislike anime, I just don’t watch much/know about much, so I’m not sure if this counts as good for someone who dislikes it, but…

I’ve been watching One Piece with my son and love the silliness of it.
Long way to go to catch up though… he’s on episode 560-something and I’m on 14 (though I did watch all of the live-action first)

I see someone mentioned One Piece in this thread a couple of years ago. Still going; seems eternal.

There are a buch of shows releasing soon. I just watched the first episode of “Detectives These Days Are Crazy!” and it’s worth a laugh or two. I watched it on 1x speed which means the tempo is ok. They have some good gags on anime stereotypes and seems to have aimed right in terms of ambition/effort, it’s simple but not cheap. It would be nice to hear some opinions on the new shows as they release.

Some of my favorite shows, they are not similiar to Attack on Titan, but they are peak Anime imo.

I loved Frieren, it was moving in a way I absolutely did not expect. The rest of these are on my watch list!

I recently finished Gundam: Witch from Mercury. It started a bit slow, and the school bits almost put me off, but once it got going I was absolutely hooked. Lovely cast of characters, conspiracy-laden plot, cool robot fights. I loved the world building, politics, intrigue, and really hope they do a sequel.

If you’ve spent any time reading about the Sengoku era, then Oda Cinnamon Nobunaga is hilarious.

If not, then it probably reads as yet another Japanese Teen Girl Drama. The difference is that these teen girls all have dogs that are each the reincarnation of a Snegoku-era warlord. It also makes a compelling argument that it’s much better to be a dog today than a powerful warlord only a few hundred years ago.

(if you aren’t into the history of warfare, the Sengoku era isn’t a great place to start. The level of brutality during the Sengoku conflicts is up there with the worst abuses of the 20th century, which is implicitly juxtaposed with the peace and luxury of a dog’s life in modern suburban Japan)

I don’t know what Hosoda said about about mixing CG and hand drawn animation in Summer Wars, specifically but I do recall he had some things to say about Mirai, which I had seen before - another good Hosoda film imo

He used CG in Belle for the cyberspace scenes and the traditional hand drawn look for the real world scenes. Haven’t seen Summer Wars yet but the preview seems to indicate it follows that pattern too.

I’d say so! It’s a little different from some of the other Gundam series I’ve seen, but it’s more or less entirely self-contained. I’m sure there are probably references the past events I missed, but it didn’t impact my understanding or enjoyment of the show at all.
