I will get an A4 really soon and am wondering how it will integrate into my DAW. (Ableton.)
Can I control all parameters via midi?
Like, say I make a sequence in my piano roll and then the A4 starts playing that. Then say I for example want to have it perform a cutoff sweep in the clip as well. Can I just go to envelopes, select a parameter there, and click in a sweep like I would in a vst-softsynth or with my Virus TI2 or Bass Station 2?
The short answer is Yes you can do it this way. Just remember that the A4 only has stereo out, so until Overbridge arrives there is a bit of faffing around.
To my mind the real fun/power of the A4 is with its sequencer, so to just use it as a VST misses a lot of its potential.
I have a TI2 as well, your in for a lot of fun, they compliment each other really well, good luck!
That’s really great to hear. Thank you, Strawberry!
Yes, I don’t plan to use it like a VST (à la the Virus TI2) all the time - I’m really looking forward to using the sequencer - but I just wanted to know if it was possible, if the track I’m working on called for it.
So looking forward to this. It’ll be my first Elektron machine!
And now before Overbridge, you can only use it this way if you’re working with one sound in one track, right? Or do you have like all the midi control parameters inside your DAW x 4? One for each track?
You can have four independent midi tracks, and use Lives envelopes to control the midi cc’s etc (x4), but the audio is just one stereo pair. So if you wanted to use a compressor or Eq for example, it will effect all four tracks the same.
You can also pan tracks hard left and hard right so that you effectively get two assignable mono outputs. This makes a lot of sense if you use the new poly voice assignment for example to get a mono bass line part on the L output and a 3-voice polyphonic pad sound on the R output.
