Analog 4 Tape Music

Electro-acoustic inspired stuff from the Analog 4 recorded last summer when I got my old Fostex XR-3 4 track recorder out and totally reimagined some tracks I was working. I liked getting the A4 to sound like this. Keeps a bit of the EMS Synthi lust down.

Incredible!!! This is super good!!!

This would go well as a Sci-Fi trailer or an TV advert of some description. Have you ever thought about doing something like that?

Great sound design aspects. :+1:t2::sparkles::sparkles::sparkles::sparkles:

This is rad!

This is fantastic. You’ve managed to wrangle Synthi and Buchla-stlye sounds out of the A4 - very impressive!

(the A4’s insanely flexible CV options makes it the perfect companion for a Synthi/VCS3, should you fail to keep that Synthi lust at bay)

Thanks! A friend said parts of it reminded him of “Escape from New York”. Maybe it would be fun as a sci-fi soundtrack.

Meanwhile must. keep. the. synthi. lust. at. bay.

Oh wow, superb! I like that dirty gritty character you achieved. Great work!

Awesome stuff! Do you mind me asking how you are getting these sounds from the A4? They are far from sterile and I would love to get into this ballpark soundwise. Is there much external processing? Is the tape saturation a large part of the sound? Any pointers would be great!

Hauntingly beautiful and evolving track, kept me on edge the whole listen! Did you use the A4 feedback for some of the crazier sounds? Very good stuff!

Thanks! I don’t recall much of how this was made, honestly. The track was done back in late August / early September and not long after that I ended up on a really long ‘compose a whole song on the Monomachine’ journey. And I was still in my early days of using the A4.

The only external processing is the 4track tape. It’s an old entry-level recorder and some cheap tapes. They do color the sound a bit, especially when saturated. But since I never recorded this ‘dry’ I haven’t been able to compare. Having the 4 tracks on tape allowed me to do two passes of stereo, direct out from the A4. I literally just sat on the couch with only those two items to do this.

I have yet to master the A4’s feedback. Using feedback is something I’m always interested in but the A4’s usage of it hasn’t clicked with me quite yet. There’s a fair amount of FM in use (the tuning-fork LFO option at high speeds, sometimes bound to performance macros) on the wilder sounds.

Here’s something using the same basic sounds - I basically warped some of these patterns / sounds quite a bit to make the ‘tape music’ track - and an Octatrack, without the tape. Only external processing is probably through a multipressor effect from Reaktor. Otherwise, this again is straight out, with the A4 running through the Octatrack which has some compression on the Master track. The kick drums are OT, everything else is A4.

The chord sounds started from one of the default patches and then got tweaked.

Awesome, thanks for taking the time to share. It’s inspired me to dig in deeper on the A4 :slight_smile:
