How to set one machine to follow pattern changes on the other. Plus physically connecting them up.
This is something that took me quite a long time to get right, which only happened with help from the finest minds on the internet i.e. Elektronauts of course!
Also important to mention that it should be preferable that both units go with same Pattern length - otherwise the synced patterns switching could not happen at the same time.
…ha, thanx for that one…perfect timing…that’s exactly what i have to make sure as next step in setting up for the next stage show…the first one with elektrons only…i’m still shaky…
and i was afraid, to get this straight would’nt become that easy…now i know…
keep on goning…like the settled, understatement british way you treat your tutorials…
@sicijk. True. I always use the modes in both machines where you set a master pattern length, and track lengths vary within this. You can get some odd behaviour if the masters are set to different lengths. But I haven’t been methodical enough to be able to predict with confidence. Still lots I don’t know about these bloomin’ boxes. That’s the Elektron adventure.
but let me guess…if i want individual and independant but still certain a4 patterns to follow…
i need to nail this down…where?..in ot’s arranger…right?..hmmmpf.
playing pattern 1 on bank a on the ot and the a4 is always just playing exactly that same
pattern and bank adress as well, no matter what, is, well, no big help…
where do i tell the a4 to change to certain patterns, only when i need this to happen…?
…even if i would take it that way and copy paste patterns along in the a4…the kit would reload every time and whatever i’m doing on the performance part would refresh the makros and destroy the flow…
…all ways lead to the ot arranger…i’m afraid…
You can use the PAT.PLAY function of the Multi Map on the Analog Four, which enables a single MIDI note sent from the OT to start any specified AF pattern or change the playing AF pattern in numbered increments. See page 51 of the AF manual.
this means…i only leave sync settings on, kill those prgm change settings again and send midi note trigs from ot’s midi sequencer to tease a4’s multimap settings…correct?
sounds perfectly like somthing you better try to figure out on a long and rainy day…
ok…ot’s arranger for prefixing different tempi…
and a4’s multimap function…
…ok…this send from space one to one in sync solution is clean and nice, but pretty much useless for me…
so i made my homework and tried to figure out what midi map can do for me…
so i cut down the range of the first entry from c3 to c3…
dial in for pattern change and nail down pattern f1 to be played once c3 shows up at the midi input…
prgm change midi channel is number 8…
so on the ot prgram change is off…cc out is off…er, int only…
now sending a clean c3 midi trig on track 8 set to send on channel 8…
hmmmm…no change at all…
i checked all options…but no success…a4 keeps remaining playing the pattern it’s set to…
what am i missing here…?
I have to echo this sentiment; your camera, sound, & edits all provide very clear information (and allow your viewers to actually see what you’re doing) plus your narration is nicely paced and intelligible.
You offer very helpful extra cues, e.g. “here I went back up one level” when navigating the menu.
Solid work, and I’m sure quite helpful to many others!
Cheers.
even if i can make it work this way, i realise now, it would’nt work right…
because if that trigger note to change the preset is on the first step of an ot sequence, how can the a4 catch up with that need to change…
so i have to place this prgm change trig at the end of the pattern before…
but that fucks up the free flow again…
ok…so what’s the right solution to tell this two hi end boutique machines to really work together without loosing the primary advantage of them to jam…?
without refiddeling the tempo manually on the fly (which only works with the arranger, trmpo per pattern won’t come, i had a ticket on this) …and without telling two machines manually at once where to go to next…?
From the AF manual (page 49), “remember to set the [OT MIDI track] to the assigned [AF] PERF CHANNEL”. Don’t use the PROGRAM CHANGE IN CHANNEL number.
@izzymonkey - thanks for that. Some tut’s I’ve seen assume too much knowledge. Someone who is learning task A probably hasn’t mastered task B yet, but that’s guesswork really.
Absolutely - no worries. Good match here of assumed knowledge (low end) with the nature of your subject (configuring MIDI and program change messages.)
I’m working on my live with the OT and the A4 the same way as the video and it works prefectly , and for me it’s totally a logic way to organise my live on the same bank and patterns on both machines .
the way i work is :
On the OT each banks are my different songs and patterns are differents sequences of those songs (intro , chorus verse, …) and it’s cool because my A4 follow everything .
But if i want to make 10 different songs in my live, the A4 have only 8 banks (from A to H ) when the OT have 16 banks …
When i hit bank 9 pattern 1 on the OT on the A4 it returns to bank A pattern 1 …
So i know that i can mix two differents song on the same banks but it’s not as logic…
I’m doing the right way to organise my live set ?
Do you have any organisation tricks for a live set up with the OT and A4 working on more than 8 songs ?
