AlphaTheta (formerly PioneerDJ / TORAIZ) Chordcat Groovebox

That’s a really great price. Wonder how flushed out the modi sequencer is.

I’m most excited about this and the Sonicware CyDrum. Japan still has it.

I liked the J-6 but thought they dropped the ball not having a Root+Scale option. The Chordcat’s kaossilator-looking right side is very appealing (if it works like I’m imagining)

crazy that they didn’t put the modulation side on the left, but other than that it’s quite intriguing, I guess the x/y pad is not for modulation sooo, anyway…
the OG made the best clip I’ve seen so far, he killed it at the end

I remember owning the Isla Instruments Kordbot a couple of times because options were surprisingly limited for easy melodic/harmonic tools back in the recent past. Now I’ve got the Oxi One, and Ableton Live has better key/scale support, so I don’t see myself switching over to the ChordCat anytime soon. But it’s interesting to see how quickly things move on in terms of music tools, both hardware and software!

As a side note, I believe Isla Instruments still haven’t updated the ‘coming soon’ screen of the Kordbot’s sequencer mode. :joy:

The Pioneer Toraiz range is a bit of a sleeper hit with me. The SP-16 and DJS-1000 were brilliant, as was the AS-1, there’s magic in this company for sure! I wish AlphaTheta all the best with this device!

i want this thing fr lol, if you are a fan of roland sound canvas type sounds i think you’ll understand the charm of the internal sounds. i think it’s kind of cool they seem to have implemented a quite fleshed out sequencer, and the cruiser function seems pretty cool ngl.

with alphatheta and rekordbox moving more towards SaaS, not sure I’d purchase more of their hardware lines. I would imagine there’ll be a subscription component that will come down the road, much like they did with rekordbox and xdjs

So, small update which I found for this device which shows that it will be slightly more expensive than the Japan only limited release from under $200 up 25% to around $250. Apparently, they’re currently conducting a survey asking people how they feel about a North America / Europe release for later this year at $249, there is a link to the survey if anyone wanted to (for whatever reason) participate.

It’s only a short update so I’m going to copy the text directly, but if you want to see the gearnews page with the prior info I’ll link it at the bottom although the destination is the same as my prior post in this same thread:

Toraiz Chordcat Coming to the US and Europe

A quick update on the Toraiz Chordcat from AlphaTheta. The Toraiz team was at NAMM this year showing it off. Although there doesn’t seem to be any new information on functionality compared to what we learned last year, we do now know more about availability and price.

As mentioned in the Sonicstate video (below), it looks like AlphaTheta is strongly considering bringing it to the US (and Europe?) later this year.

While there was no mention of price, if you follow the QR code that appears on the screen, you’re taken to a survey where you can express interest in the Toraiz Chordcat. One of the questions is about pricing: “How do you feel about the price of the Chordcat, $249 (excluding tax)?” Although this is clearly not set in stone, it’s pretty close to what the groovebox sold for in its initial limited run in Japan. (The Chordcat is still not available widely in Japan.)

If you want to fill out the survey yourself, follow this link.

I picked one up off ebay japan yesterday…Paid a small premium but for me - looks very useful. Hopefully they will keep expanding the kits, add some chord editing (like offsetting the keys in a chord, humanize etc)

Received mine on the weekend its a joy to use. Good build quality, nice clicky buttons and a very responsive touch strip. Logical layout and hardly any menu diving. The screen is very small but not needed much. Its very easy to compose - 8 tracks and each contain patterns where you set lengths, so very easy to have verse, chorus, bridge on different patterns (and then chain together if needs be). Very cool coming up witih chord progressions - you have chord voicing options and the amazing chord cruiser which finds chords outside of the scale but still harmonically correct. It comes as a mini rompler of useful sounds (keys, piano, strings etc) and some basic filter options. For me its working perfectly with Logic. At the moment i have 6 VSTs going and the Chordcat sends midi to each track and also start/stop in Logic (so a mini controller also), I just change tracks in Chord Cat and send midi - instant composition. Maybe they could add a humanise feature in future FW and more sounds. But its pretty complete. Not as fiddly or unresponsive or glitchy as Kordbot. It just works nicely. Well done Toraiz - love it
