Advice for audio interface?

i m about to stop using my mixer, i think i ll buy an audio interface that can act as a standalone mixer and use it to record my tracks, any suggestion?
max 800€ please!
at least 8 input

thanks

The new Motu Ultralite looks awesome

sigh it’s not link spam - will this forum ever work on iOS?

Can’t recomend the RME stuff enough. I’m lucky to have the UFX which is probably out of your price bracket but they offer lots of options!
Totalmix (bundled software), is wicked if you want to lose the mixer, I use it as a matrix bus system with everything feeding everything as well as L & R.
I even bus an older RME unit back & forth via adat to give me more analog inputs!

Own RME FF-400 2006 until now.
Look for one Second Hand.
Here in Germany you get one for round about 450€.
Highliy recommended.

All the best,

yes rme looks nice, really better than motu? you think the rme ucx worth the price better than the motu ultralite mk3?
and what you think about getting an octatrack instead? using the input for my virus and analog rytm and the virus input for the monomachine? i should record in the octatrack i m wrong?

I never had Motu. If i had to buy a new one, i would go with ucx, small, enough In and Outs and really good AD/DA.
One thing i read wrong. FF400 has only 6 Ins. Look for Second Hand FF-800 has more Ins if really nessecary.

All the best,

I’ve got 2 motu units (Ultralite mk3/896HD)

The ultralite is a great little unit. Super portable, super reliable. Sound quality is great (but maybe not quite up to the standard of e.g. Universal Audio or more high end units - more than adequate for live work though)

As a portable live mixer its fantastic, really easy to store presets for various setups/scenarios.

On board comp/limiter/eq/reverb are useful tools although maybe not quite studio quality.

The midi in/out on the Ultralite is also super handy (And well implemented)

I used mine on a custom build music PC for years, nowadays with MBP. Rock solid day in day out on both platforms

Also if you’re using a Mac the bundled ‘Audiodesk’ software is brilliant as a streamlined recording suite.

thanks, i ll look if i buy an octatrack or rme ucx or motu ultralight mk3

The Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 USB and midi interface will also work in standalone mode as a mixer. You also have Scarlett mix Control in which you can configure your channels, et al, and it will save those settings in standalone. Around $500. USD and great bang for buck with great AD/DA and has additional 8 inputs/outputs via ADAT.

Any reason you’re moving away from a mixer?

I would consider the forthcoming Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK mixer. 12 channel multi-track A/D plus it is a mixer. Offers summing from your DAW stems too (if you’re into that sort of thing)
$399, and same converters as Soundcraft’s higher end digital boards. Should be available within a month.

It’s a pretty good price just for the 12 A/D, let alone the mixer.

The 22 MTK offers quite a bit more for $799. Longer faders, another sweepable EQ band, more Aux sends, twice the onboard FX, 4X the DBX channel limiters, an extra group bus. These boards have me really excited!

Mackie Onyx-i series work as an analog mixer and a digital converter for a DAW. If you run a Sync-Gen then a 2x Stereo DAW Output restricts what model Onyx-i you’ll buy.

My audio I/O needs are already well met by my audio interface solution, but these new Soundcraft mixers are killer-if there’s a way to add them as an aggregate device I’ll surely get one.

my setup on OSX 10.10: focusrite scarlett 18i6, expanded with octopre mkII, both ca. 440€ = 16 mono line inputs = 8 stereo line inputs.

i have an onyx 1640i i wanted to seel it because it s really too big on my desk and to move with when i want to go making music at friends studio s and also because it cut low frequencies when recording. maybe i should keep it for studio use and find another desk instead of just a table.

Core Audio, shouldn’t be a problem.
The only thing you might run into is sample rate clocking with your aggregate device. Currently the driver is set for 24bit/48khz, but they mentioned on Gearslutz the desire to unlock other sample rates on the converter chip.
I hadn’t considered aggregation, just because of all the inputs, but now that you mention it, yes I’d love to aggregate it with my Apogee Duet 2 for the summing return A/D going into the Apogee, all monitored through the Apogee DAC.

I know Behringer has a bad rep for years but over the last few years they have really picked it up. I am saving diligently for one of the Behringer X32 digital mixers. I was going for it this year but gave into synth lust and ordered and AK, thank you Elektron!

X32

check out Saffire, good and affordable… in my opinion

I use the X32 Rack and I’m very pleased with it!
Very flexible and capable!

How many of those I/O’s do you use on a day to day running? Is your music work predominantly studio based? How well does that Onyx-i play with your chosen DAW software? Perhaps a 1620i would be more accommodating.
