Advice building my first Modular synth

Is the dfam and m32 in the case?

If so, that plus shapeshifter and plaits is a lot of sound for that size. You’d be having to skimp on what makes modular: modulation.

  • Pamelas New Workout
  • Happy Nerding FX Aid
  • Mixer/Attenuator type utility to use with both the above

That would be my starting point I think. I’m actually looking at picking up one of the new FX Aid Pro’s but the XL is a nice sweet-spot of size and utility. Or you might want to consider a Noise Engineering Versio module for effects - you can swap out firmwares so you’re never tied to one. There is the ALM multi FX module too which is rated well but I’ve not used it.

Im in australia as well. Doepfer stuff readily available at a decent price (I have the quad VCA). Get on Aussie wigglers facebook group if youre not already. Very helpful for second hand modules.

What case are you using?

Nice rack! I’ve just received my Erebus kit from those lovely folk at Thonk.

Intellijel Performance 104 7U - I got mine before it got quite so expensive though… great case though, especially now I’m making use of the MIDI I/O!

Nice one I got my Hades from them, I bought the Erebus the second it landed on the Dreadbox website I didn’t want to take any chances  I swapped the big puck knobs on mine though my fingers were a bit chunky for them with the layout.

How about starting with a semi-modular and expanding from that?

A Moog Grandmother or 0-Coast will also be cheaper than the sum of its built-in modules, and you can replace filters and envelopes down the line when you have a better idea of what you want.

Yeah. You seem to have a lot covered. Grab a Doepfer VCA and multi-mode filter. Maybe the Wasp. Heard good things.

No secret Eurorack is a money pit, but €800 :flushed:. Love the size / layout / angle / everything of that one. Off to search for a building-your-own-Eurorack-case thread…

The Intellijel 104hp 7U is on my wish list but until then, I have a TipTop Mantis, Cre8audio NiftyCASE and a 104hp 3U DIY cardboard case with Koma Strom power. The Mantis offers a decent amount of space and power for the money.

I missed out on the Hades kit! Might grab an assembled one if Santa is feeling generous. Possibly Dreadbox overkill though when I already have the Erebus, Nyx v1, Typhon and Epsilon pedal.

How do you find this as a case? I’m considering one for the next row expansion / more standalone modular instrument and they look pretty handy.

Not possible, surely! I started out with semi-modulars (Erebus v2, 0-Coast, Nyx v1, Kraftzwerg, Urzwerg Pro) as was suggested above, and then when I got a pre-built Hades DIY - their first version - Dreadbox only went and threw in a free White Line attenuator modular with it ; so what else could I do but get a rack for it to sit in and then fill with a lil’Erebus, an Antiphon, all the Chromatic series… ? The latter are great value when starting out in building a rack too.

Ha! Dreadbox do have a habit of making lustworthy synths.

The Cre8audio NiftyCASE is great value for money and feels pretty sturdy. I’ve heard just couple of complaints about faulty busboards but haven’t had any issues with it myself and it’s totally possible they were isolated instances. That said, I haven’t used any of the MIDI/CV utilities. A lid or decksaver that fits would be a nice to have. I bought mine as an overflow case but since I’m planning to consolidate and downsize, it’s currently packed up in its box, waiting for a new owner.

Buy a 1010 sampling module if youre not 100% confident with OT sampling, ideally a device which constantly records the modulars output. This way you always collect material to use for tracks. Make a fixed schedule to cut and name the material.

Impeccably cabled by the way

Just to be clear I’m using an octatrack as the sequencer and sampler.
What I would like to get out of the synth is lots of bizarre sounds and patterns I would not be able to arrange on a standard synth. I read somewhere of a module that can produce random stuff that’s repeatable? That’s phrase pretty much sums up what I want to achieve. Totally random stuff that’s repeatable in the Modular setup, not random sampled into ot and played back though I think this will enevitably the process I wind up using?

Question. What if I was to unset the stone holding shapeshifter?
How would I obtain the functionality AND quality of the shapeshifter for the same price or less without taking up more hp? Seems impossible for me but perhaps someone with more knowledge in Modular can advise a possible scenario?

The Magpie Dubldeca would give you great Octatrack integration. It’s designed for use with Octatrack. Sometimes you can find already built ones on Reverb. It allows you to fully sequence your modular with the midi tracks in Octatrack, so you can parameter lock a bunch parameters in your modular patches.

Music Thing Modular Turing Machine, Mutable Instruments Marbles and their clones are capable of repeatable random CV. The latter will even remix incoming CV eg. MIDI sequence from OT into MIDI/CV converter into external input of Marbles for random, repeatable CV based on notes from original sequence.

I also have a mutant brain, but probably not really relevant. Or helpful.
