Access Virus Ti desktop - still relevant?

Theoretically, but not really. They eat too much CPU, at least for my M1.

Alright, good to know. I have just tried it briefly, one vst running.

They are working on a solution where you use the CPU power of an external computer but work on your main computer. I’d love having a huge, maxed out PC under my desk handling all the CPU needs of the emulator while I edit everything on the Mac.

In the words of bax, one of the developers:

This was/is a tease of things to come, but we can probably make this a LOT simpler for you eventually with something we are calling “DSP Bridge” which is designed to do basically what you are asking for, but without the hassle of setting up a GUI, installing a DAW or soundcard or MIDI interface, etc. on the remote computer.

The “cheap computer” can also be Linux, MacOS, or Windows, and could be all the way from an RPi to a screaming multicore server if you so desire. Coming “soon” but no dates yet.

I always use the VIRUS Polar TI in my music. I had to repair the on/off and display, but the machine itself runs perfectly. Mr. Kemper was years ahead when he developed the VIRUS. But than he concentrated on the pre-Amps Business and the Plug-in do not work anymore.

it is one of the all time greatest synths ever made.

Amazon sells used refurbished macbooks for cheap with older Mac OS versions that work with Virus TI software. I bought one dirt cheap a year ago to use for managing the ROM banks on Virus TI2. Also Mystery Islands/Aura works well. I have the stuff loaded in mine that work so use stand alone most times as the TI2 software is very slow and clumsy even when it works. Elekton Overbridge is a dream compared to the archaic Virus TI2 plugin software!

On one hand, you’re absolutely right about the capabilities of TI, it’s superior, on the other hand, B & C indeed sound a little bit different.
Besides the obvious DAC to blame, I’m thinking there could be some idiosyncrasy in anti-aliasing stage, some truncation or anything else happening in the end of computation, resulting in very slightly, but still colored or compressed sound. One needs to compare the identical patches in emulators for both B and TI to finally pinpoint what is causing the difference.

As for the version A, this was my first Virus and I a bit regret selling it - it has much lower resolution of algorithms and DAC and sound is grittier and rawer. It may be considered as almost lo-fi by current standards, but it’s a perfect companion to MonoMachine & MachineDrum and can sound gorgeous with extreme processing in DAW, like stretching or PaulStretching. These rough chunky artifacts of truncation are very useful for ambient textures.

AURA is a good replacement though for the plugin though.
