Just put my Roland Se-02 up for sale and there’s a couple Virus B desktop units up for sale for locally for a good price.
I had a blofeld and hated trying to make new patches on it. Way too much menu diving for me.
I’m primarily interested in pads/soundscape type sounds. I got the SE-02 for bass/leads but the knobs make it kinda frustrating to program. Way too small for me. It was my first mono synth and I think I want to go semi modular for my next mono but besides all that does anyone have any other good recommendations for a poly synth that’s pretty inituitive when it comes to making new patches?
And is there a lot of menu diving with the Virus B?
The menu diving is worse on the Virus, IMO. Of course you don’t need to get into the menus as much because there are more knobs. It’s an amazing synth but possibly over-used by now.
Yea I would’ve imagined it to be a lot easier to program just based on the amount of knobs. The blofeld only has like 4 if I remember correctly.
It does seem like I hear a lot about people mention how the Virus is dated and overused but it seems really deep. I hear people talk a lot about how the presets suck but there’s a lot to be found in making your own patches
Definitely, it’s a proper synth and mostly overused in the psy trance scene for the usual gated sounds… which were dated already 15 years ago
You can get a lot of different tones out of it… but the menu diving when you have to do it is not much fun because of the small screen.
Have my Virus A since around 20 years, which is basicly half of my life.
I found the menu diving still okay compared to blofeld and it has knobs for most important paramenters like filter and envs. (just missing the comb filter on the virus)
I used to have a Virus C (very similar to B) and a Blofeld. Sold the Virus. Yes, you have knobs, but they’re not aligned to your current patch values. I think it’s a usability concern. Perhaps more important: low count of user patches slots.
imo Virus b /c is powerful synth and for me the sounds that it can produce are closer then Blofelds =) had Blofeld in studio for a year, did lot of work. Loved its big screen n sound, hated its bugs n glitchy pots((
when it comes to Virus, never use factory presets!!!, start from scratch, desight, modulate, layer…
