Ableton receiving different midi note from the OT

I use Ableton as my main DAW. I mainly do something on the OT and record the midi of me playing live.
I was always able to record every midi CC with no problem.

Atm I’m experimenting using Ableton and the OT in parallel. Everything works apart for a strange thing: if I trig any track in Tracks mode Ableton receive the midi starting from C0 instead of C1.
It trig the Sample Trigs from Ableton to OT starting from C1 and I’m able to record in Chromatic mode from the OT to Ableton and playing back with not problem. The weird behaviour only happen when I trig the Sample Trig from OT to Ableton.
WTF is going on?

It’s hard to decrypt what you really doing from your description, but:

Are you sure that the perceived difference is not due to a different note naming?

In Ableton Live the lowest midi note (midi value 0) is named “C-2” while in the Octratrack the same note is named “C-1”. The octave naming scheme is not standardized. So different vendors use different schemes.

C0 for Elektron since Analog Four…:content:

When I play in Chromatic mode the lowest C I can play on the OT is C4 on Ableton.
I know different companies might have different octave range but the thing is I record playing from the OT to Ableton so whatever midi note the OT send it get recorded in Ableton and Ableton read as it wants. In fact I have not problem recording in Chromatic mode from the OT to Ableton and play back from Ableton to OT:the C4 play the lowest OT C and C5 play the middle OT C.
The problem comes when I play in Track mode: Ableton record Track 1 as C0 but the OT play Track 1 on C1.
It’s super weird why that happens, with every other midi message/note I can record from the OT, playing back and control from Ableton.

Lowest C is C5 on OT.
C4 for Ableton, hence minus 1.

Minus 1 again. What’s weird?

It’s not about different octave ranges. It’s how octaves are numbered/named.

Ableton starts its octave numbering with -2 and the OT starts its numbering with -1.

So when you see in the OT documentation that you should send a C1 to trigger Audio Track 1 Play, you need to send a C0 from Ableton. It’s just a different name for the very same MIDI note (value=24).

I know and Ableton record and play the OT as it should in Chromatic mode

the odd thing is that Ableton trig the OT on C1 but it record C0 from the OT :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Ah I think I get it! Do you play trig 1-8 in Track mode? These are Plays Free tracks notes (C1-G1), hence recorded as C0-G0 on Ableton.

Samples are triggered with trigs 9-16 or notes C2-G2, hence C1-G1 on Ableton.

That’s it?

No I don’t use Play free tracks. I triggered using step 9-16, Ableton see it as C0. But when I trig C0 in Ableton nothing happen, Ableton trig the OT with C1.

You’re right, there is something wrong!
Sorry I didn’t get it at first, the minus 1 thing was confusing.

I checked with a midi monitor, trigs 9-16 send the same notes as trigs 1-8.
Both send notes C1-G1 (24-31).

Trigs 9-16 should send notes C2-G2 (36-43).

Yeah on Midi OX I got C1 for trig 1 but also for trig 9 send C1 not C2
Edit: Same happen in Maschine. I get C4 C5 C6 in Maschine for the Chromatic mode and play correctly on the OT. I get C0 in Maschine for trig 9 in Track mode but the OT play when Maschine trig C1
