Ableton Move : User Thread

Check out my FM Piano preset

The Chorus-Ensemble effect defaults to 100% dry, so turn this up if you want (it sounds really nice). The reverb is also set quite moderately, so please adjust this to taste.

Here is a sample from a fm piano/pad layer. Drop it into melodic sampler, give it a longer release time and make some cheesy tracks

Ah yes, thank you. you’re right, I kept searching for ‘duplicate’ instead of ‘copy’

and @x0x huge tip, thank you

This is AtmosBell

It’s an FM Bell with macros for changing the characteristics (almost like physical modelling) and heavy use of delay and reverb.

4 Instrument tracks only. No word of just midi tracks  so there’s at least that hope since midi tracks should need essentially no performance.

That’s disappointing but understandable. I wonder if 4 additional midi tracks are still on the table though.

i hope any/all of the tracks can (soon) send/receive midi (simultaneously). pretty basic…

Got mine today, really happy so far. I accepted going in that there are obviously a few things that need work, but overall in terms of the concept and execution for me they’ve nailed it.

Happy that file transfer works smoothly, better than Push - although I’d still like to see sync at some point on both devices. Safari did get a bit temperamental from time to time but Chrome seems to be more reliable. Cloud integration is really nice, e.g. just jumping quickly into Note to rename projects.

I will need to organise my presets and samples a bit better to suit the device, though - navigation is one area where it’s up to the user to set up a system that works. Having mixed thoughts about all the Ableton presets on the device, initial reaction is that I wanted them out of the way to just use my own, but they’re pretty usable for the most part and better organised than what I’ve uploaded at the moment, so I ended up using them more than I’d expected in the few hours I’ve had to explore.

Like I say, I got into this knowing that fundamental stuff like slicing isn’t available yet, but the device is so lean and focused that beyond that I’m really not sure they should add a huge amount more to it. Midi tracks wouldn’t hurt and they’ve mentioned the possibility of a few more instruments/effects, but going beyond the obvious other than tweaks around the edges I think it’s pretty much good as is. I’ve seen a few suggestions for more complex “groovebox” type features and stuff like a song mode in the discord, but for me the clarity and lack of bloat is exactly what’s great here, I hope that whatever they add keeps that balance intact.

Probably for me aside from slicing the main thing I’d like to see is sampling over usb to make it easy to use Koala sampler etc. to provide sample editing and feed it from iOS devices. Nothing a minijack cable can’t fix, but this works so well on the P-6 and 404 mk 2 that it feels like a bit of a miss right now. Clear that Move + P-6 + iPad/Phone is a monster portable setup, each one perfectly complements the other.

I will say that while I knocked out decent three track starters in an hour or so sitting on the sofa, that’s nothing I haven’t routinely done on Push and the results were basically similar. The Move stuff tends to be a lot simpler and maybe even benefits from this at least as a first draft - there’s always the temptation with Push to go wild from the start just because you can. I do miss the MPE pads, but at the same time I’m not really trying to put down final parts here either, so I don’t miss them that much.

Anyway, glad I went with my instincts on this one past my initial reaction that it wasn’t for me as a Push user. It is a killer device, even if it never gets another update.

Here’s a picture of the cover my friend printed. I was in NYC at the time and got some crazy quotes from 3d printing companies.

It was printed in two halves, then glued together.

Here’s a link to the design:

On the Move wishlist on Discord the “add 4 new tracks but midi only” suggestion currently sits with 50 votes. So it may be implemented at some point, but I doubt it’ll be soon.
I remember the question about sequencing external gear was raised though and with the barebones midi implementation that the Move devs already admitted to. I’d expect updates on the midi side quite frequently next year.

Yeah, I was writing a track over the weekend and slicing would have been nice. I hope a simpler Simpler arrives with a 16 slices mode, that can then have the sensitivity reduced to reduce the number of slices.

Amzing, I love it! Might buy one finally (as an ableton user also, however I didn’t update yet to 12)

The best video i’ve seen so far although the JXBlake (sp?) video is quite creative too. People saying it’s a mostly Techno or House machine, well it’s nice to see Atmospheric DnB added to the list.

It’s great that there are people like xOx, Pete and others sharing cool presets too, so thanks guys :sunglasses:

I’ve just bought one.

I could almost agree with you. But the fact that you can only use MIDI in or MIDI out at the same time is a bit embarrassing for such a big player like Ableton.

For a semi-professional music making device in this price range, such a limitation should almost be treated as a bug.

Anyone set this up with a Digitakt yet?
I’ve been trying to set up the DT as the master clock; not working so far.
Other way does work, but I need to assign a Move track as the midi out…

I want midi > move and audio > DT ideally, but curious to hear how you’ve set that up?

It’s a particularly egregious launch-day compromise, at least for most people. I guess on the bright side, once it’s fixed we’ll never have to look back?

I’m still not sold on companies launching a minimum viable product and spending a year or more fleshing out the feature set. Is it still branded as “agile development?” The Move definitely isn’t the worst offender in my book – MIDI isn’t really part of my personal use case – but still, I miss the days when products would launch more-or-less complete and firmware updates were primarily bug fixes.

Mind you, I say this now, but I’ll be drooling over whatever new features they announce next…

Move cannot receive clock over MIDI. It either sends midi clock or syncs via Ableton Link.

Ah, and if you send clock out, you can still disable midi in on the Digitakt so nothing is triggered.

Move sends MIDI notes on channel 1 only. If you have in the DT no track which is receiving on this channel, you’re fine.

Yeah, there are pretty glaring omissions for sure. I guess I’m not really sweating a lot of it because I don’t really see myself using it for anything other than dumping a whole bunch of material that I created/gathered elsewhere, maybe sampling back and forth with the P-6 at a push, and creating the basis of a track using the pads/internal sequencer. And even as things stand it is really, really good at this.

The bigger reason I’m not sweating it is that I’m pretty confident from the noises Ableton have been making - especially the AMA - that the really basic stuff that’s missing on midi and sampling was about compromises to get it out the door and will be addressed in relatively early updates/betas.

Yeah, for me this is the big one. For now p-locking the start point is working better than I’d anticipated, wasn’t really expecting the display to be up to much but it’s pretty helpful. But still no substitute for jamming ideas together on the pads.

Also pretty surprised - unless I’m missing something - that there aren’t loop points on melodic sampler. Substituting in synth patches for sustained parts if really needed can cover it for now I guess, but kinda hard to believe it isn’t there from the start.

Exactly why I didn’t get one out of the first batch, I normally wait at least six months but made an exception here and I’m glad I did. Based on painful experience my line is that it’s always best to treat updates as a bonus rather than buying on the basis of features that aren’t there yet. Was pretty nervous went it arrived because I knew I was rolling the dice a bit, but like I say for me it does the thing it sets out to do really well even in its current form.
