Got mine today, really happy so far. I accepted going in that there are obviously a few things that need work, but overall in terms of the concept and execution for me they’ve nailed it.
Happy that file transfer works smoothly, better than Push - although I’d still like to see sync at some point on both devices. Safari did get a bit temperamental from time to time but Chrome seems to be more reliable. Cloud integration is really nice, e.g. just jumping quickly into Note to rename projects.
I will need to organise my presets and samples a bit better to suit the device, though - navigation is one area where it’s up to the user to set up a system that works. Having mixed thoughts about all the Ableton presets on the device, initial reaction is that I wanted them out of the way to just use my own, but they’re pretty usable for the most part and better organised than what I’ve uploaded at the moment, so I ended up using them more than I’d expected in the few hours I’ve had to explore.
Like I say, I got into this knowing that fundamental stuff like slicing isn’t available yet, but the device is so lean and focused that beyond that I’m really not sure they should add a huge amount more to it. Midi tracks wouldn’t hurt and they’ve mentioned the possibility of a few more instruments/effects, but going beyond the obvious other than tweaks around the edges I think it’s pretty much good as is. I’ve seen a few suggestions for more complex “groovebox” type features and stuff like a song mode in the discord, but for me the clarity and lack of bloat is exactly what’s great here, I hope that whatever they add keeps that balance intact.
Probably for me aside from slicing the main thing I’d like to see is sampling over usb to make it easy to use Koala sampler etc. to provide sample editing and feed it from iOS devices. Nothing a minijack cable can’t fix, but this works so well on the P-6 and 404 mk 2 that it feels like a bit of a miss right now. Clear that Move + P-6 + iPad/Phone is a monster portable setup, each one perfectly complements the other.
I will say that while I knocked out decent three track starters in an hour or so sitting on the sofa, that’s nothing I haven’t routinely done on Push and the results were basically similar. The Move stuff tends to be a lot simpler and maybe even benefits from this at least as a first draft - there’s always the temptation with Push to go wild from the start just because you can. I do miss the MPE pads, but at the same time I’m not really trying to put down final parts here either, so I don’t miss them that much.
Anyway, glad I went with my instincts on this one past my initial reaction that it wasn’t for me as a Push user. It is a killer device, even if it never gets another update.
