Be aware that Live can only export one MIDI file at a time. Unlike Logic where you can export multiple MIDI files at once. Just found this out recently.
that makes sense and there should be some sort of versioning for cloud-synced devices, which is why I am guessing I must have a setting ticked somewhere that is the opposite of what I would want for which takes priority. Just hoping this is a setting and not a bug. I’m just a bit hesitant to use the cloud more until I understand what happened so I can prevent this from happening again.
In a normal Live project there is however a history of files. One could check this folder in Live if this is also available for cloud projects.
That seems possible to me. Another thing you can do is import your Move Set into Live and route the MIDI from it into Logic via a virtual MIDI BUS.
That is very strange! But only having to do it for 4 tracks might be acceptable…
Ah cool that might work too I guess.
Took the plunge. Any recent US buyers, how long from purchase did it end up shipping?
it took exactly 5 business days from order to doorstep
I ordered on Sunday and it shipped Thursday.
Some points he makes are just matter of different approach, like automation - MC-707 or a DAWs works like this and it’s fine (even though I also usually prefer Elektron style p-locks).
But he has a point about limitations. Obviously there needs to be right balance between features and usability, but sometimes manufacturers really omit such basic functions… it can be quite frustrating.
I don’t mean this in a mean or judgmental way at all but I think a lot of the Move reactions come down to a difference between players and programmers. Like that Marlow guy programs a single snare drum hit with the step sequencer and then does a p-lock on it… why!? Why tf would you work like that? Bro just bash out the damn beat on the pads with two hands and hit capture. Done. Wiggle the knobs around to automate them and hit capture, done. I don’t want to be painstakingly programming parameters individually on every step, I just want to twist some knobs and record a performance. That’s what Move is great with imo.
A little long for me. Ordered on the 12th, shipped 18th and should be receiving today.
Ordered from Sweetwater with $5 2-day shipping on a Wed evening. Had it in hand on Fri. However, looks like they’re no longer in stock there.
I’m a Logic user also. Ironically I started my Ableton journey with Note and used Live on my Mac to export midi and audio from the sketches I made on iOS………now I use Ableton for all midi sequencing and ended up purchasing Suite. I export everything as audio for mixing in Logic as I still think it is better for that but I was amazed at the power that Ableton has as a sequencer. Using Ableton definitely makes me rethink many hardware purchases over the years
Greets Elektronauts,
I really like my Ableton Move. Here I am using it as basically a stem player using patterns I created in Logic Pro.
A few weeks ago I did a live set with Octatrack and a Roland TR-8 so I wanted to see if I could recreate that same set on Ableton Move. Each Octatrack pattern was rendered into loops and places amongst Tracks 1-3 using the Choke Kit Drum Rack. Track 4 is the Move 909 kit which works pretty well. If this this had One-Shot Trigs and quantized set changes than it would be an incredible live tool for me.

Also a fun observation: The basic drum machine kits are not the same as the Core Library ones in Live. I noticed this because the Move 606 kit sounded way deeper than I ever remember an actual 606 sounding (heck, it’s damn near an 808). They are very likely the same kits used in Note but for whatever reason I didn’t put those pieces together until now.
To avoid overwriting or conflicts, always share a copied set on the cloud.
Ableton does have variations you can choose inside of their core kits, like “clean”, “boomy”, “hot”, etc., so it is possible it is one of the core kit variations.
To be fair, it seems to me that Marlow is pretty much correct about the gaps that Move has for a sample based process right now - same reasons pretty much that I was ok with waiting for things to mature a bit and didn’t feel the need to grab one right away. Fwiw in my view he was also pretty much correct about the major missteps Akai made with MPC 3.0. And it seems like Akai agree with him seeing as they have been trying to address the issues he pointed out in later betas.
I have a different perspective though, probably the key thing for me is how Move works as an interoperable ecosystem with Push/Note/Live - I feel like at the moment stuff like sharing drum racks and synth presets is a bit awkward with Note and Move? Been trying to dig into Note a bit and this is kinda bugging me, feels like it should be a lot easier to make a rack in Live and transfer it over - I think I saw a video saying you need to edit options.txt? I think this will improve a lot in future, which will probably be the point where I’ll get on board.
dang y’all. i been tryna read this manual all day and i keep getting distracted – not by Instagram or my cat but by the Move itself.
it is just too damn easy and fast to start making little beats with. i get carried away with an idea and forget that i should be trying to read the documentation.
that in itself is a hallmark of a badass piece of gear if I ever heard of one.
I’m not sure that’s how Move works. If you enable Abelton cloud, my understanding was that your 8 most recent sets get shared up to the cloud, be it the original or a copy. What happened with me was I did work while offline and away from home on Move. When I got home and turned on Move, the older version on the cloud overwrote all the work on Move that I had just done while not connected to the internet. I have gone back over the manual and the way this process is presented is just vague enough that I am still not sure if what happened was by design or if it was possibly a bug. Nothing I have found indicates how or why this happened. It’s not the end of the world, but only because it was a first project and just an afternoon of learning that was lost, but if it was something I had spent more time and effort on, I would not be happy. I just want to understand what happened and if there is a toggle to prevent this from happening again, then I’d like to know it before I trust taking Move offline or re-enabling Abelton cloud again and losing a project I care more about.
