On first check - the dont work well together. Notes on Move show on Push. They essentially are doing the same thing and acting as the one control surface. But I’m not great at this shit and could be missing a setting or something. Def don’t seem independent in any way though.
They won’t be completely independent, but maybe try switching the Move to Session mode while keeping Push in Note mode. Move might be able to be used to control the project transport and clip recording/track selection, while Push can be used to play the instruments and adjust devices on said track.
With Move in Session mode and Push in Note mode, my guess would be that selecting a different track on Move would also change the track focus on Push. This is broadly how I was able to use a Push 1 (in session mode) and Push 3 (in note mode) together.
Quick question, can you load user patches for the synths, that you created in Ableton?
Patch export from Live to Move is currently only for Drift (and Drum Racks using Drum Sampler): https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/15616909965596-Presets-on-Move
Move arrived and after half an hour, I can see it making a great travel buddy. Seems very handy as a control surface for Live and on its own, I’m able to knock out the sort of simply shit I only feel capable of at the moment.
Don’t buy this for what it may become but I can see Move getting some nice updates down the road to broaden things further. As it stands just now though - it seems quite fun, albeit simple fun.
I totally get why folks reference the OPZ with this thing. If Ableton can squeeze some more midi tricks into the equation beyond the arp and note repeat that would be fantastic. But I don’t want to get lost on some blue sky thinking here.
Curious to see how I use this over time and whether it does become my couch buddy. Build quality is lovely and it seems the right size for me vs other portable devices I’ve owned.
And for info - pads def smaller than Push 3’s. Maybe about 80% of the size.
Yeah that seems to work. Playing notes on Push and clicking clips on Move to record into on the fly worked. So can have session view on one device and a playing surface on the other form the looks of it.
I didn’t try the track thing though - forgot
Will give it a go in the morning if someone else doesnt chime in before me.
That’s so exciting to hear! I’ve quickly gone from thinking this device was a bad fit for me to realizing I’ve been looking for something like this for years.
One last question on this Move in Session / Push in Note mode situation— when Move is in Session mode controlling Live in this setup, what do the encoders above the pads do? If they adjust track volume level, I will be in heaven.
Ok, everyone can get off the ‘buy it for what it does now’ box… I just meant you can get a sense of where Move is going from where it is now… I’d be amazed if Probability and better sample editing didn’t get ported over at some point.
But, I’m more than happy with what I’ve seen so far.
It feels like an important piece in the Ableton jigsaw… and, I love that if I do want Probability right now, I can Cloud it to Live or Push 3 SA and do it; that’s why it doesn’t feel dangerous to think of the Move roadmap, because it’s easy to switch your device and have the features now.
Ouch, sensitive point?..You’re the one who emphasized getting away from the speculation in your first post…
Anyhoo, on a more productive point –
Since you’ve got one in hand, tell us more about what it can do now! For example – how’s the poly aftertouch? The Poly AT doesn’t get transmitted over MIDI but does Live record the Poly AT?
I wasn’t bashing there - I agree with you! I’d be amazed if Move doesn’t have some new tricks and things in 12-18+ months
But for now, as the preset machine that it is, it fits very nicely into my musical vibe and approach and there’s a lot of value to that. I’ve just not been doing music much of late (which may beg “why buy this then?” Questions) but I do enjoy the Ableton approach and when I do do music, I’m reaching for Live (in its various guises). So if Move helps me keep things up and generate a few ditties and ideas then that suits me.
I think it is not, but can anyone confirm sidechain compression (or just plain volume ducking triggered by the kick drum of another track) is not possible?
Not at all; I just meant that I understand the ‘buy for today’ thing, and I wasn’t saying it in a negative way, like it needs it, or we’ve been ripped off/entitlement vibes… as I said in my last post, the absolute chefs kiss is that the Move lands in a sweet spot in the Ableton ecosystem; if I want more than 4 tracks I can use the Push 3 or Live, etc.
Think about that in the context of the SP404mk2, or the OP-1f… it makes me feel more sorry for people locked into these units and wanting more than I did previously.
Honestly, I feel like it’s the link device I’ve been craving for years. I’ve said elsewhere, the Move release and the anticipation has also opened my eyes to the power of Note too, and the whole Ableton ecosystem suddenly feels very complete to me.
With the Move, I’m loving how it makes you want to create Set after Set.
Dumb question maybe, or possibly the wrong place for it, but I’ve been wondering what people use Link for? It seems really cool but I’m struggling to figure out how it would be useful beyond maybe a laptop onstage running the music synced to a laptop front of house running video. The idea of syncing Move to Live via wifi seems interesting but I can’t quite figure out what I would actually do with that.
You can use link for sync of more than just live, you can use it to sync iPad apps, dj software etc. I use it with serato and my iPad apps mostly, it’s a nice convenient way to sync multiple things without the need for loads of additional cabling as it works over Wi-Fi
It can take the place of MIDI clock over a physical cable.
For instance, I could run Ableton Live on my computer, the Move, and an MPC Live (which supports link), connect all of their audio outputs to a mixer, and have all of their individual clocks (to the measure) together in sync over WiFi.
to answer your question in a basic format, and not specifically move related…
i’ve replaced midi clock with link as much as i possibly can.
link is a sync protocol, but it does not transmit a clock string like midi. it is network based, and its a phase sync, meaning, in a nutshell, all connected devices just end up on the 1 every bar at the same time. I think it syncs all devices like 2x per beat.
if a device joins the session, it will automatically be in sync. there are are other benefits, like you can start/stop from ANY device, not just the master…
another benefit is when your friend show up with his laptop…just have him join your network and that person will be in sync w/ no midi cables/interfaces, or whatever. Just need to handle the audio.
there are apps i use that convert link to midi (i use midi link sync, but its gone from the app store AGAIN…) There a tiny bit of jitter once the playing starts, but it usually levels out just fine after a bar
Sync is by no means perfect, nor you should immediately switch to link and drop midi clock. it still all depends on your gear and setup.

Glad to hear the build quality is solid and buttons and knobs are quality. I expected that, but it makes a big difference compared to fiddling with tiny plastic Novation Launchkey ones.
We all know to buy for today, and thats what I did. Mine is not here yet. But I did read that a dev has said that the hardware and OS does support MIDI in. They can do it, but it’s not a roadmapped item yet. But it can be done at least, so you never know.
I love hearing the feedback on how it works as a controller for Live. If any of you all stumble upon limitations there, please share.
So there is no MIDI Clock in with Move…
but can it be slave when using Ableton Link?
what does the coating on the body feel like? same stuff as usual or something different?
I’m going to repeat my questions about Poly AT, since for me this is a key feature of interest:
-
How’s the poly aftertouch?
-
I know the Poly AT doesn’t get transmitted over MIDI but does Live record the Poly AT when using the Move in controller mode?
