Ableton Move : User Thread

I slice a sample and After i put other samples on the free pad

Yeah, mine are good too. Pretty much same as Push 2, which were widely hailed before the 3.

New. When I use full velocity I barely have to touch them to register a hit but when I leave velocity on, the curve is really wild.

Thanks for all the feedback. Because I do more guitar and drums with ableton and less synth/sound design there haven’t been many new features that I’ve used on the push. Also I tend to just use the mnk for a lot of editing.

I really wish I had more of a use for the Push because it really is a great controller but it’s too large and expensive for me to justify keeping around I think. The Move isn’t perfect but it sits in just the right sweet spot for me.

While I’m generally out of the hardware game now, sometimes I eye the Move.

It does seem with the 2.0, it’s become very powerful and sort of embodies much of the idea of a portable hardware instrument. I don’t much fancy “I can do it all”-boxes, for me it defeats the point of hardware instruments. So I like the curated vibe of the Move.

From those of you who use it, what’s your “Aaw man I really wish it could do this”-thing? Not like “it would be nice” but “This would change my approach on how I use it and maybe replace this and that and also thisthat.”

i mean everyone knows what the major problem is… still a fabulous device, just makes you wish you had two.

It has already replaced several pieces of gear for me. Great idea starter, especially great if you are already invested in the Ableton ecosystem (obviously).

I think if I had one request in terms of just using it for single tracks, it would be for them to add probability to trigs. However the need for this is somewhat negated by the fact that clips can be sixteen measures long, so you can sort of add your own probability. I also really love the clip based workflow (as opposed to patterns where everything is tied to a single pattern) and its sort of ruined Elektron gear for me in this respect.

If I were to try to use it for live sets (which I might in the future, but haven’t yet) I have a longer list of requests (cc mapping, quantized set loading, a few other small things) but these are all related to having it play back multiple song ideas in one long session. It’s really great for just jamming on ideas in the heat of the moment.

I’m between push standalone and move.

I didn’t use push2 much because I wanted to stay away from computer so move seems cool. But push3 feels like even better?

For me it’s less about BIG features that are needed and more refining some things in the workflow now.
For example I’d love it, if you could change all parameters of a drumtrack at once. So like control all for the 16 pads. This would be useful for chopping samples as you could change pitch for all pads, or decay times, etc. Things that one may want to change for the whole group.
The other thing that could really elevate Move would be MIDI access to the parameter pages. This would make the Move better for quick live performance.

Overall it’s a great device I think!

Move is one of my fav pieces of hardware! What would really makes me use it much more as a center piece would be:

  • a mini utility module. I’m obsessive about stereo width control and right now, it’s stereo or nothing… which makes me spend too much time preparing samples before using it.
  • 16 level velocity
  • A kind of control all on drum racks.
  • Quantized set launching, so each set can effectively be one part of a song.

Edit: oh, and a something akin to the chromatic layout of the Circuits aka looking like a piano layout.

Sounds like a champagne problem

Ok very cool @maymind_trax how much has the recent audio clip feature added to its value for you?

@SonWu sounds handy but def things I’d accept not being there.

@Kuro sounds like stuff I’d appreciate as well but could do without.

All in all, no blockers here.

How would it work for asynchronous loop launching? I don’t use time stretching, I’m more into loops drifting in and out independently of each other. Can clips transition across scenes (or whatever it’s called) without restarting, to have say one clip run its own course across several scenes without being retriggered when I proceed throughout the performance?

It is not good at asynchronous loop launching, and that’s the thing I’d most want to see addressed. Everything is always locked to 4/4 and some kind of grid (there’s an immense amount of flexibility within that grid, so tuplets and other kinds of rhythmic tricks are very possible, but a grid is still a grid). There is a built in device (nestled in the drum rack) that allows you to loop certain pads in an asynchronous way, but it is far too limited to be useful for the kinds of looping you’re talking about (the looper only has a few seconds of buffer, so longer loops are completely impossible).

Also, the lack of panning on synth tracks is still a bit confusing. It would be nice to have panning as a shift function akin to how one selects midi channel and pad color (as this would save the need for a utility device), but a dedicated utility device would be nice. The autopanner can’t be used as a normal panner (or, at least, I’m not smart enough to figure out how to do that).

Ok, thanks, I’m out then

I really wish the Move would allow me to both change the start point of an audio clip and the loop length.
Then I would have finally a device for proper time stretching of my samples.

Oh, it can’t?

Then I’m SO out.

I don’t care for probability but conditional trigs are the big one for me. I lean on them heavily on the OXI One and Elektron sequencers.

I don’t think you’ll ever see conditionals on the Move though. It’s way outside of the Ableton paradigm.

The only thing that kind of bugs me is the audio gap between sets (which is like a few ms hiccup). Launching clips within a single set is flawless. Since you’re not looking for an all in one this likely won’t be an issue because it’s really only relevant for uninterrupted playback across “songs.”

I guess another very minor (and maybe personal) thing is in control Live mode. I can’t for the life of me figure out why the track select buttons don’t serve as scene launchers!? Like why have one of the 8 horizontal pads launch clips across 7 tracks? Especially when there is an unused/ unlit button in the same row!? Every controller in history is built around 8’s…

If you’re an Ableton user Move is a no brainer in my opinion (especially if you don’t have Push). They really knocked it out of the park in terms of physical quality, sound, and utility. Also, haven’t installed Schwung (yet) but that is whole new worlds…

Yeah these would be my top requests

We can’t move the end point on audio track in OS 2?

The clip length is determined at the moment the clip is created. You can then stretch or compress the audio file by it‘s endpoint within this frame size. If you make it longer, it cuts off at the end.
Ableton has really good timestretch algorithms, but their workflow is not thought out
