Ableton Move : User Thread

Which size keyboard did you go for?

Well I got the 37 mini to start with, but then got the full size 49 key, they’re excellent with live and really decent in standalone what with all the custom modes available… I think I’m gonna hang on to the 37 though, I did consider selling it but it’s great for my iPad on the couch…

When you say standalone you mean as a midi controller for hardware synths?

Yeah both have midi out, and multiple nice features like chord sets, arps with mutators, scale modes, user chords, just a really good value package imho, also the have multiple custom modes like the launchpad pro that you can set up in the components app…

Nope, which also reminds me that I must ask on the Discord.

Thank you. If you do find out can you post it here please ?

Will do, however I was reading up the thread and saw this so I guess not until the full public beta goes Live:

I would like to clarify that we do not have a public beta program for Move at this time, and we do not provide support for it. Additionally, please be aware that there is no recovery option available if something goes wrong.

I was on the fence of buying the op-xy. But after jamming with the move I keep being amazed by the immediate workflow. Here’s a new jam:

Still enjoying it, especially for a couple of reasons.

For me, getting ideas down is 80% about the writing and 20% about sound selection/design. Move gets this ratio spot on. It’s fun, musical and only gives you the basic tools needed to make music. I don’t think about any of the technical limitations, because at the writing stage additional features don’t make a bad idea good. What I end up with is a bunch of ideas in cloud that I can use as building blocks for future songs.

The other aspect of it is the way it all works seamlessly with Live. It’s about as plug and play as it comes with the cloud sets and the ease of switching between Move, Push and Live that it’s just a really good balance. Most importantly it gets rid of the groovebox dead end.

It all just works as a system of making music. Move and Note for ideas on the go. Push (controller) for working up an idea on your desk (or even on the go if in standalone). Then onto the computer itself to finish the track. Everything has a role in that setup which I think is the strength of the whole system. Because everything is connected, there’s a fairly minimal learning curve to go from one to the other.

As someone who has to haul gear onto the desk to make music, if I need to do something quickly I will probably use Move, either standalone or to make some very quick adjustments to parameters in controller mode. Longer sessions is Push. Finalising ideas is on the computer using Push initially and then mouse and keys in arrangement view. It all just works out because there’s nothing to think about, save for sending a few files over to Move to have your own samples on it. Everything just works.

I guess you could argue Move is a luxury of sorts. It’s not strictly necessary with all the tools Live has, but it is a nice way of putting ideas into your DAW. It’s really down to which ways you want to invest in. But for me, I like it. My current frame of mind is that to avoid messing about too much, if starting again I’d get Suite, Push controller and Move and leave it there.

That’s were I’m at. I had plans for this and that. But I’ve settled, pretty happily on the trinity of Move, Push 3, Live.

Once I’ve gotten all my jams off my Novation Circuits, I think I’m going to have a pretty streamlined workflow.

Maybe not quite as much fun, but definitely less hassle.

Yeah I started there too. I guess the one thing I liked about Circuit is probably the generative sequencing across the pads. However, the upside of Move’s ease of transfer, and the fact that the generative aspect isn’t that critical to the ideas I make, means that convenience wins out. Move has done a really good job of making a lot of boxes seem like a crazy amount of hassle, just on account t of how easy it is to get stuff into Live.

Now you say this, I realize I feel exactly the same way. It’s also so easy to add samples over Wi-Fi, or to shuffle things around in Note (naming stuff for example) and having it just sync.

It’s kind of spoiled me on everything else.

Anyone know if you can hook the move with a mpc and use as an audio interface

Yes, it works. Both devices run at 44.1kHz.

Nice, thank you

Just noticed mine does this too. Anyone found a solution for it ?

Mine was replaced by Ableton fyi

Ok cool. I’ll raise a support case with Ableton. Thanks for the feedback.

Odd thing is that it only does this plugged in to my MacBook Pro. It’s fine on my Mac Mini.
