I fear that this enforced compatibility between Note and Move is slowing down the further development of the Move quite a bit.
Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s my impression as early Move customer. I think Move will never get a feature that is not included in Note too. Thinking about how long Note 1.3 is already in beta, we have to be really patient.
Seems it’s the Ableton way. Push improvements have always been similarly hampered by Live’s slow development (if Live doesn’t do it, neither will Push)
I like Move, it’s nice - but for immediacy I actually prefer Note.
Push (standalone) literary runs live… If live doesn’t do it how could push do it?
And I think people are missing the point. Note has endless processing power and storage, and the UI can change if needed. Move… Not. Move is limited. If they want to keep parity, then moves limitations in hardware (processor, storage) and fixed user interaction are holding note back.
Anything you can do in move is easy to do in note.
What holds it back is that software development is expensive and slow, and expanding the team would cost more then the device probably brings in in the long run, + that limitations where set while designing the device that can’t be changed easily (not just hardware, also software architectural decision)
I actually also wonder how the development progress will work if Move and Note are tied.
I share the seemingly common view that Note is a bit frustrating to use whereas Move is pretty much a joy to use.
The difference in the UI is the bit I’m concerned with, in that to accommodate them both, there maybe a case where we get the worst of the both Worlds.
Don’t get me wrong though, for the price, Note is great and I’d always stump up the small amount of money to have it on my iPad, simply for the convenience.
I think “parity” is overstated, they are already deviating with the number of tracks.
I think in the long run they will settle on “mostly”, and deviate where it doesn’t break the codebase and compatibility between the 2. For example the UI workflow.
Again, can’t get it to work on Main either, but I’m glad we are confirming each other’s experiences, and take your time on the manual. I am patient.
Glad you are responsive to my messages, and if I can chase down your contact on gumroad, I will. I have yet to find the contact/email option on that platform for many developers…
I’m cautiously optimistic that Ableton isn’t tied to the idea of feature parity between Live, Move, and Note. There are some subtle differences that suggest this like the fact that Move can capture automation which Live can’t do, and 16 pitches mode.
There are lots of cases where Move could have a unique feature that still wouldn’t break file compatibility with Live & Note. For example imagine if there were some sort of procedural/generative/random midi functions that just changed the actual midi notes in the piano roll. It wouldn’t matter if Live didn’t have the same features.
