Ableton Move : User Thread

Sadly not. I hope they add an External Instrument device to handle this use case (I’ve already requested it on the Discord), or at least allow sending it to the master FX at least.

Yeah that would be great! I really live Ableton’s FX, so this would be like a sequencer, sampler and FX pedal in one.

Is it now possible to record Move straight over USB into AUM? Can you confirm that?

You’ve always been able to do that.

Does anyone have any thoughts on integrating a Move in realtime with a laptop to record audio tracks?

Basically I want to create a beat on the Move, then record a bass guitar part and loop it, then maybe add some more samples or synth from the Move, then track guitar and vocals on top of all of that. So going back and forth between Move and other instruments.

It seems like the options are
1: Record the output of Move into Live on its own track for reference, and then later go back and import the Move set into Live.

2: Make a beat on Move, record it into Live right away and loop it, then mute it and make a synth part, record that in and loop it, etc. just using Move as an instrument and tracking one part at a time.

3: Do all of the Move parts first. Stop and import that set into Live and then build on top of it.

None of these seem totally ideal but I was wondering if there are any other options I’m not thinking of. I wish Move had multichannel audio over USB.

Or it would be cool if Control Live mode actually did the stuff you’re doing on Move in Live, so you add a drum sampler to a track and choose a preset, it mirrors the same thing in Live so Move and Live are always synced up in realtime.

You could use Link to sync the Move with Ableton, and just work on the Move and in Ableton separately. Then copy the Move project across when you’re done.

Monitor the Move’s audio in Ableton via USB, or via your mixer/audio interface/etc

What a quick little device this is. Just had a go at it again yesterday and it’s surprising how quickly you can sketch out a proper song idea that sounds great. I need to use the Move more.

Thanks, purchased bundle

Yeah that’s what I was thinking with option but also might as well record the output of Move for reference. Usually the patterns I create on Move end up with the 1 in a weird spot. Does Link follow the transport or is it just a simple clock sync? Like if I stop and start and jump around to different parts of the Live set will things get weird?

Hi, a little bit unorthodox question, but is it possible to record two mono instruments into a sampling pad in Move?

I was thinking of using a cable that splits into two mono’s, or a splitter and insert it into the stereo input. The channels Left and Right will than have a separate signal that I then can split in Ableton Live.

I’m guessing Move is not intended two have two separate inputs, but would this work ?

That should work but when using the Move you’ll hear the two instruments hard panned.

my favorite feature of the Move.

i’ve ended up with so many random ass jams thar i never would have dreamt up in a million years using this randomly selected presets.

Assuming you have access to reliable wifi and don’t have any philosophical issues with using Ableton Cloud, this is a SUPER easy setup. The key is that Cloud lets you grab individual tracks instead of needing to load the whole set — this means you can easily transfer tracks into Live as you go.

  • Create a new Move set and sync it to Ableton Cloud.
  • Connect Move Standalone to your audio inputs, either via USB-C or your normal audio interface.
  • Create a stereo audio track to monitor Move.
  • Use Link to sync tempo (and start/stop, if you want).
  • Jam away!
  • When you feel like something is ready for Live, or you just want to free up a Move track without losing what you were working on, go to Cloud in Live’s browser and click the dropdown icon next to the set name. When you drag a track into your Live set, it carries over the instrument and effect presets, any samples not in the Live stock library, and your clips with automation intact. IIRC you can also grab individual clips and device presets but I don’t have my laptop with me to check so don’t quote me there.

Also remember that you can record Move’s stereo mix within Live. It’s not as good as Overbridge if you prefer to work with audio, but the Cloud/stereo audio combo is heads and tails better than what you get from Teenage Engineering. The main caveat is that Move’s master effects don’t carry over from Cloud unless you load the whole set — if, like me, you make liberal use of the master Saturator, you’ll want to make sure to set it up in Live and bypass it on Move.

Record each one in a separate pad, pan both to taste, then resample both into one pad.

So I have a brand new laptop and new mobile interface to try to get a portable setup going. I tried to create an aggregate device with Move and my interface and that worked for a minute before it crashed Live so I abandoned that.

I haven’t been able to get Link to work at all. I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong but I’ll try to dig into it deeper tomorrow.

Worst of all, the audio out from Move into my interface is so incredibly noisy. It worked fine in my studio setup (patchbay → MH 2882 interface → Mac Pro) but not on this new setup (MOTU M6 → MacBook Air).

I’m guessing it’s because I’m trying to take a stereo unbalanced output from the Move with a stereo 1/8" cable into a TRS 1/4" adapter into a balanced input and instead of cancelling the noise it’s doubling it or something?

That’s correct. You’ll need a breakout cable like the Hosa YMP-434, which converts from 1/8-inch stereo to two 1/4-inch mono connectors.

Even that didn’t cure my noise issues, I ended up having to buy a 3.5mm ground loop filter to suppress it, it’s probably my biggest gripe with move to be honest, I love everything else about it but the usb c noise is pretty dire, I can’t believe it wasn’t picked up at the testing stage and eliminated…

Not all the People has this noise. It’s not a Move problem.

I know it’s doesn’t affect everyone fella, but it’s common enough for Ableton to publish official guidance on the subject and that’s been the case since it’s release so that suggests to me that it was known about pre release…
