Ableton Move : User Thread

Talks about delay, then people comment that he has beat repeat but doubles down and say it isn’t.

Generally negative

Basic MIDI implementation. The current one is a bit ridiculous at the moment.

I wasn’t gonna compare these but… “im desperate for clicks, remember like and subscribe, also remember my patreon if you wanna support the channel…”

I’m so over YouTube now tbh, as soon as I see titles like that I’m running the opposite direction, I just don’t even see the point in comparing a bit of gear that in its infancy to something that’s had a couple of years of updates and is clearly aimed squarely a different end of the market, I dunno maybe I’m just being a grumpy old fart but shit like that has me seething nowadays, I won’t click the link on principle alone, it doesn’t deserve to be rewarded…

/end rant…

just add an ad blocker so you don’t reward him. But I had to watch the video because I had experience with the SP and was finally going to get a move. But this video was so negative, and the guy made such an oversight on it having latency

Fully agree. The Move would be an almost perfect sound module for the Hapax if you could sequence more than one channel at time from an external sequencer.

I think since the last update added POLY Aftertouch out Ableton will sort the MIDI, but I also agree that is so basic in its current state as to be barely useless.

They’ve added poly aftertouch. But still no good ol’ fashioned mono aftertouch out lol

But I’m confident everything will be coming, they have said its all on their roadmap It just feels quite alpha on the midi side at the moment.

Agree. And my mistake. Don’t want to mislead anyone.

this guy didn’t come off as generally negative to me at all, sure he didn’t offer succulents, not that I mind succulents who doesn’t love succulents and he doesn’t have the bed side manner of Ricky Tinez but literally who can pull that off without driving you nuts… literally nobody else but Ricky!..

this guy was clear, concise, doesn’t want to waste your time , and doesn’t want you to waste his time … , he might have made a mistake but he got more right than wrong… imho he’s a bit refreshing, no fluff etc…

I’d encourage folks to listen before rejecting because you never know what you might have missed…

On the surface of it, as a comparison alone I don’t see anything wrong with that, but the video takes it elsewhere, where this alone doesn’t make you a grumpy old fart.

I tend to have knee-jerk reactions to comparison videos but try to remember someone might only be able to afford just one, and there’s no hands-on opportunities before buying, so that’s why they can be helpful.

OT

I choose “don’t recommend channel” for any click-baity titles. Apparently it doesn’t eliminate those recommendations fully, but I feel better about it. I have to do this constantly for sports stuff. As a basketball fan, there’s too many fake announcements.

The slicing thing he wasn’t happy with, even though before it was the method to slice stuff on the SP before the MK 2 and many pro used to do this technique where you copy pad etc and move point. However, that was the impression I got.

I understand, I thought he was just a little brisk, like the tea

He wasn’t really negative much in video, but in the comment section he has argued twice i think that note repeat wasn’t on when it’s clear as day it was and he thought it was lag/latency? Perhaps he doesn’t know what note repeat is yet, but he should own up too it and look in the manual. I even pointed it out as well.

Not sure it’s the same thing and tbh not going to watch that, but I do think that there’s an obvious gap for slicing per pad using a similar layout to 16 pitches. That just makes so much sense (and simpler in Live/Push is so good) that I’m gonna feel like it’s the obvious “missing” feature unless/until it lands.

I kinda thought that koala over usb would make this redundant but it’s not really clicking for me. I think I’ll probably just revert to p-lock or per pad start points, feels like it’s more in flow with how Move works in general.

But another point has been really hitting me. I feel like this is a preset machine first and foremost. Which is not at all a criticism or anything - I just feel like it works best when drawing on pre-prepared material and just throwing ideas together. So tools like charlesv’s are a godsend, I basically want to pull stuff in and see what I can make out of it and I feel like it’s quicker and easier to do prep on the computer.

Think I mentioned this upthread but the other thing I really, really want to see is an option to pull the random kits/patches when you create a new project from user library and an option to re-roll a random kit/patch or randomise a sample in a kit. The more I work with it, the more this is becoming my single biggest wish for this box.

Also, does it seem like they’ve made the randomisation more coherent in recent updates - the other day it gave me 707 - Juno Bass - Rhodes - Marimba. And I did feel a bit seen, I’m not gonna lie.

Yeah I don’t know how they’re determining the 4 tracks, I’m assuming just tags like drums, pads, bass, lead so it should be possible for them to let us add those tags ourselves to our own patches right? That would be really cool because the idea is great but I don’t really use the types of sounds in the factory presets.

that’s the impression that the clip gave me, I think he thinks the same thing

It’s funny, this really seemed like it was going to be an annoying gimmick I’d just turn off and wipe all the presets like I usually do with a new device, but it turns out for me at least to be the heart and soul of the box.

I don’t really mind the Ableton presets but on principle I want it to load my own stuff. Almost works too well. It’s getting to the point when I open a new project I feel like I need to just check out what it’s served up for a minute and that usually ends up going somewhere so more often than not I stick with it. Since I started writing this post this has happened twice - not complaining or anything, but it would be nice to even have a load empty project option, was checking the manual but couldn’t find it if it exists.

Re latency - lol, pretty sure exactly the same thing happened to me when I loaded the 1.4 beta, was wondering if it had added a bunch of latency then realised I was in note repeat mode.

Yeah I think that or an option to save your own template like you can in Live would be great. I mentioned on the discord feature requests that it could be cool if you could shift click on an empty set to have both options. So clicking gives you the 4 random patches, shift click gives you the blank set or your saved template set.

I measured the pad latency of the Move and SP-404MK2, and Move was 16ms while the SP was 12ms. They seemed almost the same.

Move is 1000% designed to be NOT Dawless friendly. It’s made by a DAW. LOL.
