A4+TR-09 sidechain

Hi!

I am using the following gear:

  • Analog Four
  • Roland TR-09
  • mixed with 1010 BlueBox

My question: how’d you suggest to do the following?

I want to sidechain compress the volume of the dubby chords on the A4 whenever the TR-09 kick kicks in.

If you’re answer is somehow to run the drums thru the A4, is it possible to do that not running through?

Also: is really an Octatrack a good tool for sidechain duck?

I would like to avoid buying an external compressor and/or using a DAW.

Maybe I’m asking too much? I am sorry but the sidechain kick duck is a significant part for me.

Thanks!

As far as I can figure out, OT or A4 does not allow external sidechain compression

The general work around seems to be programming oneshot lfos to trigger when kicks happen

Not possible with your current setup, unless the Bluebox has a built in sidechain. You could fake it by locking or modulating the volume of the chord track so it ducks at the same time as the kick, but this isn’t sidechaining.

No. You can get ducking effects in the same way as the A4 by modulating or plocking volume, but again, not sidechaining.

You will have to get one of these involved at some point if you want an actual sidechain compression effect - you need some way of detecting when your 909 kick hits and pulling down the gain of your chord track at the same time. You can program other gear to work like this - I have programmed Nord Modular patches to do this in the absence of a standalone compressor, and you could do similar with a Zoia etc - but this is likely overkill in your case.

Does the TR-09 have individual outs?

You might be able to use the audio from an individual out to drive the CV in on the A4, and configure that to duck the AMP level. My only attempt at this so far failed, but I’ve read others here had success.

Try to find a used FMR RNC… it will perfectly solve this challenge.
