Guys, i currently started building a small modular setup and already have both A4 and OT.
Would it be best to sequence/control the modular with A4 or should i get a midi to cv module (mutant brain) and use OT? Are there any pros and cons between the 2?
Using A4
Pro: no money outlay
Con: none
Buying Midi-CV module
Pro: none
Con: requires money to be spent
…as simple as truu…
a4 is made for cv control…!!!
and offers even a dedicared sequencer lane to talk to modular exclusively…
in fact, with it’s parameterlocking capabilities, it can safe u much money for many modular units u don’t need at all, if u use the a4 in clever ways…lots of lfo tricks for example can be sent right from the a4 in first place, instead of rewire madness in real patching…
but be warned…ur about to open a pandora box…
and of course, split some audio output from ur modular system to feed the ot…
What im thinking though is that the A4 has only 4 cv outs so if i connect to lets say an Oscillator, I will have already used 2 of them for trig and cv…leaving me with only 2 cv for lfo etc. Right?
What do you mean by this?
It means split some audio out of the modular to feed the Octatrack ;-). Your OT needs regular audio feedings didn’t you know?
…duplicating cv’s within a modular setup is no big deal…but a dedicated midi to cv module is…
so no worries…the a4 can do way more to ur modular plans than u can think of right now…
and yes…feed ur ot with ur modular results and cross any sonic border…
I’m already applying the OT’s fx and lfo’s to the outcome of the modular. Thats what you mean right fred?
you could use the new MIDI sequencing for that and save all 4 cv signals for modulation
…well…u might also consider sampling some modular stuff…
and open the realtime sample mingle it up universe…
As you pointed out later, the Analog Four only outputs four CV/Gate signals.
A MIDI-to-CV module might provide you with more outputs (the Mutant Brain has 4 CV outputs and 12 Gate/Trig outputs). Other modules will have differing capabilities.
The good news is that you can start immediately with your Analog Four and wait for your modular setup to take shape before deciding whether you need a MIDI-to-CV module.
Yeah, but i do need a midi to cv module that way, right?
for sure, i suppose with modular modular rather than semi-modular where MIDI is more common as an input for notes then you may well need that - all my ‘modular’ is cased up semi-modular with MIDI in, so this isn’t a universal solution, just an option, you’re right
