Complete noob here. I’ve never sequenced a midi synth from an external device, I have not reached that section in the OT MKII book.
I’m wondering how I should route all this stuff.
I have
1 OT MKII
1 A4 MKII coming
2 Avalon bassline synths with mono outs.
I’ll have an AR MKII in January, but leave that out for now.
OT Midi OUT > A4 Midi IN
A4 Midi Thru > Avalon Midi IN
Set OT to send clock and transport and program change on chosen midi channel.
Set A4 to receive clock and transport and program change on chosen midi channel.
The OT will drive the A4’s pattern changes this way.
I’d run the A4 audio into the OT, and the Avalon into the OT.
Once I added the RYTM, I’d run the Avalon into the A4 as if it were another track.
I’d also try sequencing the Avalon via A4 CV out so I could transpose everything as one unit.
Thanks, what about the audio? I have 2 avalons. I guess from above, Avalon midi out to the other Avalon midi in.
I have no clue how to use the Octatrack to change the patterns on the A4.
When you say chosen midi channel, I assume you mean OT and A4 on same midi channel so they can communicate. Sorry for the dumb question, my extent of midi is sending clock from one device to another.
I’d try running both Avalons into the OT using inputs as mono channels.
Run the A4 in the others as a stereo input.
OR, run both Avalons into the A4.
Yes
Midi OUT - sends midi out from that device
Midi THRU - passes what ever is going to the Midi IN out of the THRU port.
I’m not familiar with the Avalon, but it looks like it does not have a Midi Thru, but a din sync port.
So you’d probably go
OT OUT > A4 IN
A4 THRU > Avalon Sync In
Avalon Sync Out > Avalon Sync In
However this will not allow you to manipulate the Avalons from the OT, only sync the clocks to the OT.
Yeah I have enough to do right now with my first OT, let alone manipulate the Avalons with the OT. That’s what I was thinking prior to your reply, route the A4 into 2 inputs in the OT.
My goal here and when I get the ARMKII is hopefully have all this stuff hooked up via audio inputs and not have to use a mixer.
Yeah, I’m mixerless myself.
If you do all the sequencing per device, there’s not much need to Midi control anything from the OT, just clock.
However, using the A4’s cv outs to sequence the Avalon’s could be a way to sort of ‘add more tracks’ to the A4.
Thanks man. Yeah I’d love to be able to do that man, but it’s beyond my capability at the moment. Never touched any of this stuff until 11/16
Sucks, I wish I got in in 1990. I’m 47 and 3/4 of the stuff people talk about, I haven’t a clue.
You’ll get there.
It’s confusing at first, but after a while it’s all make sense.
