A4 MK1 + Yarns = Sync Out Issues

Okay. I have had Yarns for a couple of weeks (mBrane). Somehow when I first got it I managed to get some setting going where the transport on my A4 was starting and stoping the sequencing on Yarns. Okay, whatever.

What I am trying to do it send the Midi clock from the A4 to Yarns, then take the clock out as a sync pulse for other applications. I have read the Yarns manual a number of times as well as the A4 manual. I read forums here and on wiggler and elsewhere.

I can’t find a straightforward in depth set of directions to go by. One thing I have been doing it trying out various settings and monitoring the clock output with different meters, trying to get a trigger to pulse. Nothing.

Is there some giant threads on this somewhere? It’s like yarns and the a4 came out before the boom of synthesis how-to videos so all you can find is this stoned dude.

are you in 4T mode? I think at that point there might also be a tempo parameter that needs to be set to external.

Please be more specific on what you have tried so far. I dont know that eurorack thing, but on A4 you can choose on a per project basis, if you want to send midi clock and send midi transport separately. also on which midi channel. try to set the same midi channel on yarns…

are you aware, that you can also send clocks and pulses via the A4 cv outputs?

MIDI clock and transport are not Channel Messages, so this aspect isn’t right

this is the best plan if the CV outs are not being used

As with most questions for older instruments, they’ve likely been asked and are searchable here

The title is misleading (now changed) as there will be no " MIDI clock fail" as such, this is a question of using the Yarns

you are right, those are global messages :zipper_mouth_face:

First of all I had the damn layout backwards because I have an mBrane, which has the row of gates on the left and the cv on the right, whereas on Yarns it is the other way around. Somehow I didn’t notice, then all of a sudden I did. But I am sure I tried both outputs earlier anyway.

I got a clock pulse when I moved the tempo from external to a bpm.

One thing I noticed when I did this was the pulse is pretty fast, so I compensated by making the divisions.

So that rules out some things. Like I said, when I first got the module I was able to control the start/stop on the Yarns sequencer with the A4 transport buttons. Also the lights on Yarns would flash when I hit the A4 midi keyboard.

Okay I got it. Time to celebrate…

Ohhh, not so fast. Now I need to sync. What is the relationship between the pulse coming out of Yarns (which is receiving external tempo) and a trigger coming out of a cv output every 1 beat of a 4 beat loop on the Analog 4? Intuitively I want them in unison right?

Right now I can control the transport functions on Yarns with the A4 and the tempo seems accurate.

I send the Midi Clock from the Analog 4 in to Yarns, Yarns emits what looks like gates on the scope. So I superimposed the other signal which is a one every 4 straight beat (cv trigger). The two signals don’t drift at all for minutes now.

That’s Yarns making a grey square gate, while the elektron A4 is emitting the white trigger you see.
