Hi there… To extend number of midi tracks i’ve connected digitakt to a4 using auto channel. this works fine as I can use more hw synths using digitakt midi tracks. however, there seems no midi transpose option on digitakt which I use a lot on a4.
Any option to use A4 midi transpose through digitakt OR any other midi transpose option for all connected synths to A4 AND Digitakt? e.g. external box??
Hi, unfortunately as the note data is written into the digitakt sequencer, then without overwriting that note data which is already in the sequencer there would be no way to conventionally transpose the progression.
While I do know that you can transpose notes on a per trig basis or for all of the chromatic keyboard on a per sample basis, I suspect that since a sampler (unlike A4 and digitone, for example, which do have sequence transposition) is not a pitch-based instrument, then that impacts the entire sequencer and playback paradigm.
I’m pretty sure any workaround that I can think of is probably too convoluted to be useful in any practical situation, but the bottom line here is that unfortunately I don’t think this is going to work and the only thing I can suggest is creating multiple patterns by copy/pasting the existing, then adjust the midi tracks per pattern so that they contain the transpositions you wish to achieve and then just plan ahead on pattern changes when you want to transpose.
This comes at a cost, because something like manual control of filter cutoff or any other manual movement of level or parameters will be impacted pattern to pattern.
Another similar pain in the ass would be having “dummy patterns” set up with the transposed note data and then you could copy paste only the trig data from a transposed pattern into your existing midi sequence to overwrite it. This would probably allow you to stay in one pattern but I don’t do a lot of live record copy pasting of midi note data, so I have no idea how smoothly this can be accomplished (if at all) but one would think that since the sequencer data can be updated in real time, that it’s fundamentally possible.
Hopefully this gives you some ideas but YMMV. Good luck.
Thanks for this! I’ll experience a bit with the workarounds you’ve suggested. Another option would be of course to consider another hw sequencer capable of controlling more tracks / hw synths. + proper sequencer transposition feature.
Yeah this is absolutely an option but becomes quite a lot of gear and grows expensive very quickly. I also think that while some other hardware sequencers do have “elektron like” features, a lot is also sacrificed so it depends on whether you enjoy the “elektron experience” as part of your workflow.
I’d try the workaround and see how it does, might not be very fun to use but it’s free to try.
Hope this works out for you.
Edit: If you somehow got a DNII, or probably a Syntakt, that would open the door to lots more midi and transposition, but like I said previously, it quickly becomes expensive and the value proposition goes down if it would not be used as a proper synth along with the other gear. Just to say though, it’s also an option.
Hmmm. so a DNII would be capable of controlling 16 midi tracks. interesting thought. Currently I use the A4 only as midi and cv box making it an expensive 6-track sequencer.
