A4 CV out is waaaay off

my A4 is going to this user: analogback (i know you are worried man, i feel you), but i think the newest the synth/module, the less problem youll have…

Yeah but like i said, i tested the synths against another CV sequencer and keyboard controller. The issue is not on the moog side of things.

Yep I’ve been in that menu.

Doesn’t that seem weird that I need to start sending uneven arbitrary voltages, from a digital unit that should be digitally calibrated to send the correct voltages?

to fix the scales i’ll have to change it to like .78 volts instead of 1v per octave, or something, I mean that’s just so crazy that a digital unit would need to be hacked like that to function properly.

I think this may be the only solution. DO you know where i can find a layout of the inside of the analog four? Does it open in a way that allows for easy access to the pots? Do you know which pots control CV out?

So you would rather void your warranty and screw around with trim pots than adjust a couple of parameters from a menu? Have at it
Seriously, it only takes a couple of minutes to tune and I’ve only needed to do so once.

And for the record, although it sounded way off with my slim phatty with the default settings (1v & 3v), once it had warmed up, and I had figured out how to tune it, the values I ended up with were something like 1.09v for v/oct and 2.98v for middle c. Not too far off (but I guess 0.09v/oct can make a big difference over a 8 octave range - >1semitone per octave).

I had to do this with both my MS20 and Minibrute.
I had fired it up, and was so excited to get going, and once the sequences were playing I scratching my head as to why it sounded like absolute hell…

I started playing with things in the V/OCT section for each (as the synths were tuned pitch perfect to one another, and The values I ended up with were WAAAAAAY away from 1V/o.

The bright side… I wrote the numbers down, and now its a 30 second operation.

The manual for the moog says that middle C should be at 3.00v, and v/octave should be 1.00. This is certainly not the case.

Despite what the Moog manual says (or suggests) the Slim Phatty does not operate at precisely 1volt / octave.

I think the correct setting is 0.97, but don’t take my word for it - you’ll need to experiment a bit to find the correct value. Once set, it should work as you expect.

There are no trimpots inside, except for an LCD contrast trimmer.

I have been thru quite a few moog synths…from a Taurus 2, thru the phatties and minitaur, voyagers and now sub and NONE of them have been 1v/ per octave! That measurement Is a guide line I find… Most of them ran at. 97v (the Taurus was the best…and oldest)

The A4 isnt the problem…the receiver of the CV output is the problem. And yes Moogs have a poor CV implementation. My (Ex-) Voyager also needed 0,97V. I wonder if the new Sub 37 has that fixed…

Moog synths are not properly scaled to 1v/oct in the first place, which is why everything has to be adjusted if they’ll scale properly. Moog is happy to perform an expensive operation to make this the way that it should have been in the first place, with you also paying shipping both ways.

My Analog Four had messed up CV scaling on one of the four outputs. The other three scaled perfectly and the fourth one (I think it was “A,” the first one actually) was just all over the place. Over the course of one octave it would drift sharper and sharper or flatter and flatter until it was completely unusable. I put in a customer support ticket with Elektron and was shocked to learn that there doesn’t appear to be a hidden scaling and calibration menu or anything like that. I had to send it to them to get fixed - not sure how this was done - but it was gone for over a month and it’s been fine ever since.

It sounds like your machine has a similar problem and hopefully it’s under warranty still and you can do the same. It was frustrating to deal with, but once it was fixed the CV works perfectly - no weird need to “dial it in” or perform inappropriate micro-adjustments.

That is crazy…
I’d hate to think that some poor soul didn’t use CV for the first 12 months of buying their A4 and this KNOWN issue wasn’t covered because the warranty had expired…
I’ll be one of these people who won’t use CV for a while after they buy the machine, mainly because I haven’t any CV gear yet. But if this issue occurs when I do, I’ll be sure to save a copy of this thread…

Interesting way to state your point.
No-one is saying that if he has a faulty machine that he shouldn’t send it back under warranty. What’s not clear yet from his posts is whether the machine is actually faulty.
I performed some inappropriate(?) micro (?)-adjustments in the CV menu, and now everything works ok.
Probably worth trying that before sending the machine back to Sweden for a month.

I posted about this on the old forum I think, on my A4 the LCD readings do not correspond exactly with what is coming from the outputs, so I just use a multimeter to set it , try that or if you don’t have a multimeter use a tuner instead. Yes it is annoying.
