Which is better for minimal/industrial techno?
For producing, I’d say A4+AR and if you want to go live, I’d personally choose A4+OT because you can premaster some backing tracks or loops in stereo. Still there are so many factors to consider, so that you should read the specs of both to get good idea on the capabilities on the machines. Personally I prefer the ARs trig mutes over the OT’s audio mute when playing live, but the OT has so much more and I’m using it as a sampler, drum machine as well as a midi sequencer (which the AR doesn’t have).
Too make it short: I sold my AR due to OT, but everyone has a different way of working and purposes on what to do with the machines. If I had known better before, I’d have gone with OT in first place since I’m mostly jamming and playing live with hardware.
I had a machinedrum + A4, Then i switched the machinedrum for the octatrack, i Think the octatrack is harder to learn compared to the AR But much more possibilities, i sample lot of loops out of cheap apps like ElasticDrums…
assuming you’re going to be using just those two boxes for almost everything… then I’d say it depends on what sort of sound sources you like to use, mainly. so, if you’re a sampling sort of person or synthesis sort of person. or if you have loads of other synths/sources you can sample, versus not. clearly the AR will do the bulk of the drum work for you in either scenario; so what material do you want to work with for the rest?
on a related note, I just ran into this against the clock yesterday. worth a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrufy5GPDq4
IMO RYTM is the best Electron machine. You could also do OT plus RYTM. But RYTM is a must.
Currently AR mk2 has a very similar to OT functionality. I mean you can play samples, you can sample realtime. I think OT is good because of MIDI tracks you can use to control external devices. So if you don’t need to control other devices it is better, probably, to take AR. Scenes and performance features are amazing. Same as amazing fader on OT. Also OT has more effects then AR, but I didn’t like them at all. So Iv changed my OT to AR.
This sums up my thoughts perfectly.
yea I want Rytm to complete my dark trinity but probably MK1 for smaller size and bugs have been worked out of it and OB is available for it plus price good buy right now. But I need to try out the MFB drum machines.
Both combinations are perfect. I would choose the OT+A4, which IMO has a almost infinite amount of sound possibilities.
I have both, and then fun factor is truly insane.
