A4 and MD

Sorry for another noob question, but what exactly do I need to hook up a MD and an A4? Which cables exactly? Also, am I right in thinking that if I run the MD into the A4 this will take up one of the 4 tracks of the A4?

Thanks

A MIDI-cable for syncing them, and audio cables (TRS cables, preferably balanced ones) from the MD, if you want to use the A4’s effects on the MD sound. And yes, I’m pretty sure routing the MD into the A4 will take up one track, as you need to route the Left input into Osc1 and the Right input into Osc2 of a track (or vice versa).

there’s a range of ways to set this up.

I recommend you take a look at the SETUP EXAMPLES section of the A4 manual.
there’s descriptive illustrations and instructions…

Thanks. I have checked the manual but it doesn’t answer everything.

What way would you recommend if I don’t have a way of mixing the outs of the MD and the A4? That’s why I was thinking I should run the MD into the A4 so that I just then run the main outs into my monitors.

If you just want to mix the main out level of the MD within the A4 just link the main outs of the MD to the ins on the A4 then go to EXT IN on the FX track and bring the levels of the two external ins up to where you want them hard-panning them accordingly to keep the left/right relationship, coming out of the MD, correct. You even get P-lockable sends to the chorus, delay and reverb to play with.

EDIT- and you don’t lose anything, you still have four A4 tracks at your disposal.

I started out sending my MD L+R out to the Ext inputs on the FX Track.

Next i’d pan the Ext inputs hard L+R, this sounded good but didn’t really gel the two boxes the way i had wanted even with a touch of send effects.

It really came alive when i sent the inputs to a voice as well as the Ext Inputs.

Keep the Ext ins dry from the send effects and use the osc inputs for a kind off parallel saturation, overdrive, filtering, verb, delay, chorus etc. You loose a voice this way but your kits/patterns will sing once that A4 voice is tweaked to taste.

Then we can set trigs and p-lock envelopes, distortion, filter etc on that voice, absolutely mighty!

Well worth loosing a voice with this setup, i promise :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Sounds good. My machinedrum arrives tomorrow. Can’t wait. The A4 and MD are my first ventures in hardware - so nice to not be using the computer.

Can somebody help me out? I’ve run the md into the a4 and have it coming through the fx track. Problem is I can’t get them to sync (ie. if I press play on the md and then play on the a4 they’re not synced). I have the midi out of the md connected to the midi in on the a4. Could someone run me through the midi settings I need? I’ve tried quite a few different settings but it’s defeated me so far…

Cheers

you need to set one of them to send clock & transport, and the other to receive over midi, then you’ll just press play on whichever is sending. not sure of the exact menu locations as I don’t have an a4 yet

in the A4 global slot there is a setting for how the midi is transmitted, either midi only or midi + usb … see what happens if you change that.
when you have the md global menu open there is a subsection with a sync section, just as capsella explains it
