Yeah, one of my favorites.

I love the MkII hype. I just bought a DIRT cheap A4 MkI. And I might pick up some more MkIs now that the prices are so reasonable.

So keep GASing for those MkII guys!

I like that painter example … maybe switching the angle is a good idea …

If an artist decides to create the next piece of art on a cardboard with charcoal, using only the basic background color of the cardboard and the black and gray shades of the coal … this has something in common with the approach … less is more.

But is this a more creative or even a better approach than painting in full colors, with special brushes and techniques, allowing to create many different textures?

As said in some comments already, creativity comes first. Creativity creates the idea. To make the idea real, it takes tools, be it as simple as pencil and paper, or as complex as canvas, oil colors, and many brushes.

If there is no idea, there will be no art. If there is no tool, there will be no art eigher. There is nothing wrong with either approach. The only mistake we can do is to believe that we can buy creativity, ideas, and quality of work and art by buying tools, or even by buying more and more tools

no idea = no art —> false
no idea + good tools = maybe becomes art

i‘m not thinking of getting ideas, luckily i‘m one of those guys who are getting ideas by itself from somewhere i haven‘t explored yet

sometimes i‘m not having any ideas and by just fiddling i‘m inside of a creative process what is already art.
maybe thats the point why even unexperienced users can call themselves an artist by doing stuff accidently and without any ideas and plans …
like traktor made every none experienced music lover a dj (sorry :upside_down_face:)

creativity isn‘t something you can find, it find‘s you if you‘re open for it.

maybe you ment this differently, because in your post you seem to describe just the contrary.

Even if an artist throws a bladder of paint to a white canvas … and it was not only, because he missed somebody with the bladder and it hit the canvas by chance … there is creativity AND a general idea about what could happen and could be worth to be explored and exploited further

You are right, a tool can be inspiring, and often it is, but there will always be a difference between a music lover, fumbling around with traktor, getting some nice tones, or a great DJ, who get’s the dance floor rocking all night long.

IMO nobody needs to “find” creativity, it’s in the genes of each person already. Children show this in the most pure form. We only have to keep our own child alive in us and listen

Sorry, if this was too philosophical

Personally sick of seeing GAS addiction posts. Does this exist in other hobbies? Let me buy shit without making me feel like I have to go join a 12 step program. I’m an informed consumer and spend my money how I want, and I know nobody cares about my productivity. </end counter rant>

You are a great teacher mike. When we all finally follow the right path of your way of GAS, we will have no gear anymore but much more time to hang out here

Well… all the gear‘s got to end up somewhere, right?

Lady’s and Gentlemen, in this world of gotta grab the latest and greatest, it’s often overlooked the simple joy of giving, and when human nature has got our highly but not fully developed monkey brains reaching and running in all sorts of directions, sometimes a little bit of personal reflection can reveal what a true blessing it is just to be a part of this crazy roller coaster they call life. Some may have bought the ticket, some may have woken up on the ride and are still trying to figure out if they’re dreaming, but one things for certain, if you follow your heart it will lead you to a place where we all are grooving, together…

Give this man a round of applause and let me introduce to you the defier of gear lust, the conquerer of his own desire, the freakily free funketeer coming at you from his own special frequency band of the Internet, the one and only winner of the first unofficial official invisible GiveAwaySynths award… @Kasi! :boom::beers:

Astoundingly and against most odds and gearhead tendencies, @Kasi has battled GearAcquisitionSyndrome and flipped it right on its head, he has Given Away a Synth!!

This is exemplary Elektronaut behavior. I’m honored to know this fine being and it gives me great pleasure to acknowledge his act of valor when faced with the insurmountable challenge of battling gear lust…

Let this serve as a lesson to us all, and shall @Kasi be forever a beacon of hope, a glimmer in the dark shadows, for he is bravely paving the way forward into a a new future, where helping a brother or sister out means more than obtaining the latest desire…

I’m proud to know this man, it is my hope that funk shall flow freely and unrestrictedly through all his future endeavors… :monkey::sparkles:

The thing is: if a carpenter buys a new Tablesaw that is the follow up of its old one, still holds the same blades and cuts wood, but had a better located on/off switch and the moving parts work a Little better, because it speeds up his workflow, no one would question that.
If a musician sells his ot1 and buys a ot2 because of the same reasons, it is gearlust.
Watching myself, I totally agree. I do it as a hobby. I love making music and I love playing with gear. Most, of what I have is stuff, that I don’t need. Most of the stuff I buy, is because I want to, not because I need to. I know that, and I don’t always like that part of myself, but the joy of something new is worth it most of the time ,-)
BUT: a lot of people do music more serious. It’s their job, it’s what they do to make a living etc. I would highly differentiate between what they do and what I do

Uh, realized, Thread is from 2018 …

I understand the point being made and it does it happen and I think everyone gets tempted.

But…here’s a photo of Carl Craigs studio now.

People didn’t choose to just a few bits, they all they could afford and as soon as they started making money, they got more gear.

Also, they were using £1,400+ samplers in their money, the history peoples money.

http://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/akai-s950-digital-sampler/16

s950 Launch price was £1,399 :stuck_out_tongue: Actually more even with xpansions…

FOR THE FIRST-TIME buyer the S950 is as attractive proposition a clean-sounding 12 bit machine with provision for memory expansion up to 2.25Mb

Excellent. Thank you
