For me personally, anything after Tri Repetae required some amount of persistence and also appropriate setting/context in a way - not exactly an easy and immediate click or not. Rather a neural rewiring of some sort was required.
It paid off pretty much every time, up until Quaristice. That’s where I felt I was not getting any sort of new perspective on their sound. Subsequent releases inspired less and less interest.
But here I am, happy to finally see them live for the first time ever in two days.
I started listening to them when Tri Repeatae came out and lost interest after some time. Then i came back a few years ago and bought Exai. I was feeling like wow, now i get their more complicated stuff too. It all made sense.
When i listened to that album again recently i was feeling like a noob again. I think i have phases where my mind is open or ready for their music.
It also depends on the setting of course. For example i bought the Krems liveshow recording and listened/danced to it on acid in total darkness at home. Quite a special excperience. Duh.
Pretty intense but also refreshing in a way.
I consider myself a fan but i can live without their music for quite a while until i need another dose. But i know they’re right at the top of boundary crashing artists that still develope a new vibe of hip hop, techno and breabeats or whatever. I would say they’re alone up there on that level.
Sometimes i don’t get it but maybe not all music needs to be understood. I can definitely feel that they’re on to something.
If i would be on a lonely planet with only ten albums of one artist/group i would probably choose Autechre because there’s still a lot to explore for me in their music.
And i know i could definitely battle every alien with these records, no matter how advanced their stupid space music might be.
I’ve always tried to listen to the most extreme music possible, because I’m a twat like that.
I want to hear new sounds I’ve never heard before, I want new experiences, fucking hate nostalgia.
In many ways Autechre are the most extreme artists I listen to (even though that’s not really their primary goal) and I only know about a lot of the others through listening to them.
I’m still trying to find that track they did that sounds like a dial up modem though. Loads of people I meet and talk to about Autechre always talk about this track, but I’ve never heard it.
Was also at Liège. Took some time to get into , cause yeah they just went right at it , no intro Towards the halfway point people really started to groove to it. Bit special as you don’t see a thing … but there was something intimate about everybody just slightly rubbing a bit against each other in the dark Anyway had a good time !
Saw them yesterday.
Can’t help but feeling a bit disappointed.
I used to be longing for beat material in their live sets, and this time it was beat all along. There was one short pause without kick, and everybody cheered. The ensuing part was great, but then it went on without pause until the end.
I’m sorry I missed the last tour.
I saw them yesterday too and had a completely different experience. I really enjoyed the performance.
Listening to layered beats at this intensity for about 90 minutes is definitely exhausting. However, I was amazed by how they manipulate time and speed. I also heard many non-beat layers. Beautiful almost emotional pad-like textures emerged in the background, never mixed too much to the front. For my liking, the balance of the mix was great, “dancey" yet abstract.
To summarize it briefly, I am happy that I went but given the chance I won’t repeat the experience.
The percussion is relentless and thrown at you full force without a single break 90% of the time. From time to time it reconstructs itself from very chaotic i into something a bit more “conventional” and slightly more sparse, and these moments are immediately rewarded by extatic audience cheers. Then it quickly falls back into the usual mayhem where more intricate sounds and melodies get burried under the avalanche of kicks and metallic claps.
The peculiar thing is that you could randomly pick any 20-30min out of those 90 and it would be enough to get the picture without missing anything.
That said, it is still a unique experience and worth having once in a lifetime.
I have to say the supporting act MDX sounded fantastic. If he is there, don’t miss it.
Seems similar to my experience years ago … too random , I miss Melodie’s and some beats I can lock into
I’m not keen to listen to a max for live random patch for hours .
I was tempted to buy ticket for their London gig but I genuinely think I’d leave when autechre arrive on stage … the support acts look more interesting .
I realised years ago I much prefer their early material … I admire their choice to develop their own sound and based on the tour they have a big audience around the world to warrant a tour and I do hope they have continued success .
I was at the show in Prague. Almost missed it, because it was sold out. Stood up in front of the venue with “will buy a ticket” sign and after more than hour, when I had almost given up, I got one. So I was very tuned to enjoy it. And I did.
“Saw” them for the first time. Some twenty minutes in I was unsure, but it got better. I was even dancing at some moments. Still not sure if this unfolding of the music from challenging to enjoyable was objective (by the band) or subjective (finding patterns by my brain). Anyway I am glad I was there.
I went to the highly anticipated concert last night, too. It was the third time seeing them in the thirty years I’ve been following them. As always, they were amazing; they never cease to surprise me. They started with their classic hybrid alienated hip-hop sound and ended with chaotic breakbeat. The crowd was dancing hard. I’ve never felt bass and kick drums like that before. When they took the stage, it was like a steamroller or an icebreaker tearing through everything in its path. These guys are light-years ahead .They where unstoppable , played for 1 and half hour. I’m not exactly sure what message they wanted to convey—perhaps something about a future that will never arrive or a past that never ended. It was one of their best shows. Fucking amazing
