Hi there. I just ordered a midi splitter y cable and its arrived and I’ve realised I ordered 7pin instead of 5 pin. I wanted to control my midi gear from digitakt (5 pin midi out)
Is there anything i can do to make 7 pin work (eg removing 2 of the pins that arent used) or should I just return?
Cheers
What devices are you wanting to control from your Digitakt? You can either daisy chain them if they have MIDI Thru ports or buy a MIDI splitter box from Kenton or Analogue Solutions etc.
Hate to rain on your idea, but a splitter isn’t recommended for midi, you should use a thru box which has active circuitry, a splitter might work fine, or it might be unreliable, dropped notes, missing note offs etc. Either way it isn’t the proper way to do it as midi uses a current loop.
If you’re DIY inclined there are a few kits out there. The good thing about a thru box is that you don’t need any hard to source parts or micro controllers etc. You have an opto isolator (literally to electrically isolate the MIDI in port from the rest of the circuit and MIDI thru ports) then a buffer for each thru port you want to implement. Basically a couple of chips and a few resistors and caps. Add a battery, some sockets and a box and you’re done! A nice easy introduction to DIY projects and something very useful.
Normally you cannot buy MIDI splitter cables. If you see a splitter cable with a DIN connector on one side this cable is not meant for MIDI, but is a DIN audio cable (used for quite old gear)!
There are all kinds of DIN audio cables with 3 to 8 pins and they convey audio and control signals (inputs, outputs and remote).
So please double check that is really meant for MIDI otherwise it will not work.
