Hey, looking to buy one of these to compliment a techno improv setup. I already use an OT as drum machine/sample player paired with DN (works great for me). First i was thinking to get a 2nd OT with one of the EZBOT templates on it, but a handson DJ mixer seems appealing too. OT will be better for transitions/fx and looping, Xone seems nice regarding EQ/filters and probably more handson. What would you guys choose? Thanks
A good mixer definitely
I have OT and xone 96, and my fantasy is about a 2nd OT, the OT is smaller, can play backing tracks, and finally enough inputs with a 2nd one.
With xone i always wanted a addituonal player, xdj 700 is 850 Euro.
The xones are fun to play with, tough decision, but a 2nd OT is damm tempting.
yeah footprint is an important one. currently i slightly gravitate towards the second OT (even if iād love to rock a good DJ mixer). problem with the DJ mixer is iāll also probably want to incorporate a looper + external fx unit so it will be more hauling + more expensive. and iām still not sure if it will give enough options to have various methods of transitioning. my slight doubts regarding the second OT is limited inputs, sound quality regarding ADDA+FX (subjective) and āonlyā using it as a glorified fx sequencer/looper. but currently it seems the best all-in-one solution for quick transitioning/FX/looping
I think the correct levels help a lot with the sound quality aspect, i pre process in Abbelton my sample chains, remove unecessary low frequency from percussions, ok maybe a omphy clap sometimes, but that helps too. Also it opens up the neighbor track possibilitys, if a certain fx is important i just bake it into the sample (chain) with various intensity anyway.
I use the OT in my dj sets with the EZ bot templates, 2x denon s1200 and a record player and a super cheap dj mixer ā¦ itās actually a great combo.
I find a cheap mixer is a great way to extend the number of inputs on the OT, the EZbot template is great for tricky transitions.
Depends on what youāre doing but maybe both the second OT or the Xone are overkill for your needs?
Thing is i use the first OT strictly as a drum machine/sample player (sample chains + xfader are awesome for quick sound palette changes) so i donāt really have spare tracks for thru machines
Edit: sorry misunderstood. Yeah i probably would only need one of them
I have OT and Xone 96. The filters on the Xone 96 are nice and the crunch effect adds some nice saturation to drum tracks but thatās all it has as far as effects go. An alternative to the Xone 96 could be the DB4 which also has onboard effects.
I thought about adding a CDJ to my setup but I donāt a clear idea of how I would go about integrating it into my setup. Whatās your use case for the XDJ 700?
Backing track with time stretch, there is a converter between midi clock and pioneer xlink as raspberry pi project, or just a/b to wave the arms, and have less stress in the set.
Second OT; more samples/backing Trax/EFX
thanks guys. i went the āfuck itā route and bought a 2nd octatrack
Good choice, a backup unit for eternity, or anything inbeetween, i have 2x A4, no regrets, maybe i do 2nd OT when i clearly hit a wall, there is nothing like it, or at least when end of sale is announced.
this is what is called a āmen in the middle attackā user.
Congrats, bold moves usually get rewarded.
Hi, can you please share the setup detail for DJing?
I wanted to DJ with my OT but lack of faders make it a bit fiddly.
(I have EZbotās templates). Tnx
Itās actually really simple, doesnāt take advantage of the OT too much, but the fact that my Denon S1200s have like ā¦ zero effects, itās helpful.
I run the 2 CDJs and 1 turntable into a normal DJ mixer (also doesnāt have effects). I have the send from the mixer going into the OT A/B and main out from OT into the return on the DJ mixer. This way you get the additional control of the dry/wet knob on the mixer.
I really only stick to the āspaceā and (I think) ācrushā algos on the EZbot template, again, very simple stuff. Tap tempo on the OT is good enough to do some interesting mixes/fades between weirdly incompatible tracks.
Itās really really basic, and I use it more of an effects box than the things that I normally use the OT for, but itās definitely a handy assistant if you already come from a background in beatmatching and are pretty familiar with your set in advance.
I got a budget dj mixer and the S1200s take USB drives, since I already had the OT, it was perfect for what I needed, but would definitely be overkill to buy one just for this purpose.
ā¦letās be realā¦a classic battle dj mixer and two decks to feed it, can take u ANYWHERE U WANT!
so, for now, iād say, a proper mixer is a reasonable next step in addition to what u gotā¦
but a&hās other/way cheaper none xone battle mixers will also doā¦
since uāll defenitly also want a second ot to get things perfectā¦
no need for further fxā¦just make each ot two decks to end up with 4 individual deck players that can cover anything u needā¦
