$20 iPad Octatrack wannabe?

Yeah, it shouldn’t be too difficult. I’ll know more after my OT arrives, but a big decision in pulling the plug on it was due to how much I’ve been enjoying sequencing my apps, and wanting to use the midi sequencer on the OT to control certain apps and sample their output. If you’ve already go the tools at your disposal, you should try it out.

add me to the list of those with app graveyards on their iPad - the only ones I get mileage from are the ones that can’t really(cheaply) be replaced in hardware - E.G. Lemur (ie cheaply), but i wouldn’t try to use it as a MPC pad substitute because hardware is always most engaging - there are a few which exploit the touch interface amazingly well and are enormously powerful, but the ipad still doesn’t grab me in the way that hardware does

I love the “Bow Mode” of samplr and don’t know how to have the same with Octatrack.

I’d prefer a $20 Ipad Monomachine and keep my H/W Octatrack

samplr’s bow mode is a basic form of granular synthesis.

[left]Granular[/left]
[left]You can kind of do ‘granular’ with the crossfader already.
Load up some (short) sound and slice in into, say, 64, enable slices, enable slice looping. Then map the crossfader to the slice number. Try it with a small bit of speech or vocals. Stick a short amp envelope on it, place some trigs, flick the crossfader around to change the timbre.[/left]

Maybe I am the only person in the world doing thos. I buy an app and use it for 5 minutes then never use it again. Its crazy really becuase the ipad is still such an amazing peice of tech but its nothing like a real hardware Elektron

I’ve got the same problem.
I’ve bought a lot of audio apps like Lemur , Waldorf Nave, ims20, Animoog, PPG Wave etc and i just never use them …
Those are excellent apps but … i don’t know , for me the Ipad is more something to browse the web and listen to movies and stuff.
I have to stop buying apps really. If i didn’t have a Monomachine , Octatrack, A4 etc… i guess i would use the Ipad more but right now i just don’t need anything else to make music (except the next Elektron machine of course :))

Looks interesting, but ultimately like others have said I have a hard time using the iPad as an instrument. I have Samplr and I never ever use it.

On the other hand I’m about to buy an interface to use the iPad as my main DAW with Auria.

Similar situation here. I’m actually banning myself from purchasing any new iOS synth/sampler apps until I use the ones I have already purchased!

I do however use Neyrink V-Control Pro quite a bit to control Pro Tools while I’m across the room having fun with all my Elektron gear!

The only thing less inspiring than making music with a mouse and keyboard is making music with a touch screen.

I wanted to like it, for mobility sake, but I friggin’ hate it. Plus it’s just more time spent staring into a screen, neck cranked down, mouth open, and one finger moving. That ain’t livin’!

I’m a sucker for iPad music apps and I buy nearly all of them I run across…that being said, I passed on this one…developer abandoned ship on the previous version and I’m reading this new version isn’t ready for primetime yet…I will wait

I think a touchscreen is great for a lot of the process…every since I picked up the CME Xkey, I no longer have the stigma of the kb on the screen (that’s the only part I didn’t like)

doesn’t have to be used like that. with a midi interface you can set up a tactile midi controller and map the controls that work better that way in the apps that allow it (faderfoxes here)…and sequence it from the OT. i have mine set up on a swan neck attached to the crane stand that my OT sits on…this way the iPad becomes a very powerful partner / feeder indeed for the OT …plus I can use the lemur app with kraftf’s template to control stuff more comfortably on the OT.

I really need to get an interface/midi done right though, I really dig this CME xkey and would love to have ipad/OT with xkey for the keys…soon

Haha, ya it funny, I originally got into iPads for music. I thought I was going to love the futuristic interface of touch screen!!! Turns out I actually find it tedious working on a touch screen, but there are about 10 synths on there that I can say I like better than any vst Ive ever tried. I actually REALLY like the sound of a lot of apps, and at 20 bucks instead of 200, having a touchscreen sound module with every different type of synthesis you could imagine is pretty handy. Between my OP-1 and iPad, I’m good for digital synthesis. And I do love digital.

I agree with a lot of people on here, at least my iPad 3 isn’t powerful enough to do anything incredibly cool with by itself… most keyboard apps don’t have a sequencer so it makes it difficult to program patches since you’re constantly triggering it with one hand, leaves only one hand free to tweak stuff. Using elektron stuff gets you used to a higher standard as well. However, using the OT to sequence apps like Nave and resample them really made the iPad more easily accessible to my workflow, and Samplr is really great as well, exporting those loops into the OT allows me to get longer ideas going.

Since getting the ot everything to me is a sample source! I also have bought a crap load of apps and haven’t finished a damn thing with it and to be honest I don’t think you can.'at the moment
Apps like animoog though are as good as anything in the ios sphere or vst in general. It’s bloody fantastic.
Samplr is pretty good but you have to be disciplined or you’ll end up noodling for hours with little to show for it.
I haven’t been able to get into lemur which is a shame because way back in the day I almost bought one
Sunrizer has a great synth engine
Thor is deep and my second fave after animoog
Check out boarderland s - lots of cool potential for sample fodder
