I used to go to Klangbad Festival which was a weird offshoot of Neubauten 2 in the southern German countryside where I happened to live. It’s funny how people from there just went to the festival because it was close and cheap, having no idea that half of the artists are just making noise with tools.
I find it fascinating that you did that stuff on your own because you found it interesting and only later found out there’s an actual band/movement behind it.

I think it just appealed to the caveman part of my brain. Like a modern equivalent of happening across a hollow log and noticing it’s resonance or being fascinated by manipulating the properties of a stretched animal skin to change how it sounds. I see kids discover and play with sounds from random sources and objects all the time. Most seem to think it’s neat and then move on after a few minutes, I’m just obsessive enough that i never stopped. I had also become interested in our relationship with garbage as a kid which reinforced my use of it in my art (and still does). I always tried to write essays about it from different angles for different classes, psychology, sociology, history, various sciences, etc. Plus, i had a very blue collar upbringing so i had power tools in my hands as far back as i can remember. All of these things combined with having odd aesthetic tastes just led me down that path once i started making music.
Due to busy times at work and a well deserved holiday, I am way too late. But I would like to complete this task, so here we go!
June: Lateralus - Tool
I am no metal guy, even left a Tool-gig when I saw them at a festival mid nineties. Probably the real metalheads find this album too commercial or lame, but when a colleague advised me to just sit down and listen through the whole album it just clicked. The rhythms, the whole apparently mathematical approach and especially the drum parts by Danny Carey. Simply hadn’t heard anything like that before and it stuck.
Still one of my absolute favourites today.
