1010music Bento

Let’s hope I’ll get it before I’m on vacation :D. Let me know if there’s a specific thing you’d like to know.

just how you really feel about the current state you get it in and if it fits the need you’ve already articulated … I’m really interested in this one, but not so much that I don’t want to know the truth about it… just want some respectable clarity from someone with experience.

Gotcha! I have little tolerance for cumbersome workflows, so I’ll let you know.

The biggest thing missing for it to fill the role I envision is the MIDI sequencer. But since they list this one as a feature on the product page, I’m sure it will come. Also hope they’ll implement a feature for easily making multi samples on the device itself.

I think my biggest worry atm is the CPU more than much else. Watching the loopop video the CPU jumped up a lot when playing a multisampled instrument with nothing else going on. Want to see more of what it’s capable off in some more videos. I’m almost certain I’ll end up getting one because it’s got so much of what I’m looking for in one package. End of June I’ll see how many of the things mentioned for the 1.1 firmware update are implemented and by then there will be plenty more videos of it in use

But when you buy e.g. an Early Access title on Steam they are normally priced accordingly, with the premise being that you accept it’s unfinished and may or may not be eventually. It’s a totally different value proposition to expect this business model to apply to hardware.

I reckon I will be interested in seeing what happens in June with 1.1 and how that materialises.

I don’t think the age decides this. I think it’s a function of ROI, it happens sooner on the development with smaller companies than larger ones, but essentially you keep developing by a product for as long as you can afford to, then you release it. Technology plays a factor too; companies nowadays can rely on sending firmware and software updates after release to customers to improve and-or fix hardware.

Supply chain costs are generationally high. That’s why more companies are releasing products more in an acceptable place rather than a complete one. Of course, there are exceptions - niche industries just increase prices to offset costs. Their customers rely on day 1 full feature set as they have an industry that relies on it.

for some reason I started looking at this again. I don’t need another sampler but it’s starting to interest me. Once they add audio tracks it could be fun. If they let you overdub loops in the future this would become maybe something I cant resist. My sp404mk2 might be getting nervous haha.

It’s here!

First impression doesn’t give me too much confidence, apparently I have to use a micro SD adapter to put anything on it or update it. None of this is explained in the quick start guide. You can just plug a USB cable into an OT and transfer files, and that thing is ancient.

Size fits nicely with a digi and I like the built and form factor. It’s heavier than I expected.

I’m confused by the need for a micro as adapter to update?

What about it doesn’t bring about confidence?

Does that mean it is not read as a USB mass storage device?

Yeah 1010 stuff doesn’t just transfer files over the usb, you have to load the SD card using the computer, and then plug that card back into the device

SD card access via USB is coming. They have stated as much a few times. I believe that will spill over to blackbox as well.

Is the screen cover glass or plastic?

I suspect that when all the features which are coming for this device actually do materialise, the United Nations regretfully will have to delegalize Bento. Too dangerous and subversive

The device is delivered to customers and there is no manual yet?

Excited to hear actual user experience

it wasn’t a challenge. i was saying “aw man, is that so? :disappointed_relieved:

i understand. I don’t mean to sound so antagonistic, but i do want to offer the alternate perspective. and am genuinely shocked that the response isnt overwhelmingly positive for something i see as a complete game changer and dream device. but i also get that my workflow isn’t the same as most people’s.

i can put myself in the shoes of someone who is dealing with bugs or a feature they wanted implemented. I wasn’t very happy when they took away the ability to sequence clips live in BB fw 3.0. so i get wanting to vent, but i also feel like people might be a little too entitled when it comes to feature requests at times. i can imagine how overwhelming that must seem to a small product developer

it’s also a matter of 64 gigs vs 1tb storage. so you win some, ya lose some.

I just didn’t like the experience of unpacking the thing and then being left with no explanation whatsoever of how to get samples onto it by any other means than live recording. And then assuming how it probably works based from Blackbox info and then searching for decades old devices I can use to transfer samples to a micro SD card. That was not something I expected when getting a new flagship sampler boasting about the SD card. It’s also a bit clunky to remove the SD card (but nothing scary like OT cards).

I think I’ll have samples on it by tomorrow and will then hopefully enjoy actually using it in little bits over the next days and weeks. The device itself makes a good first impression and I’m looking forward to using it. There already seem to be enough functions there to make it a really useful tool for me personally.
